Can-It-Forward Day

July 31, 2015 by Emilee Evans

This year we have successfully grown some fruits and vegetables! We didn’t have much gardening luck in Texas, but our garden here in Ohio has thrived. We’ve already started harvesting and need to do something with what we have. I’ve already made 5 jars of dill pickles (I’ll be sharing my recipe soon), but I need to can some of the other veggies. I haven’t canned in years, so I’ve been both a little nervous and excited! That is why I was so excited to learn about International Can-It-Forward Day!
International Can it Forward Day
Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate my post and review. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
On Saturday, August 1st, Jarden Home Brands will host this year’s fifth annual Can-It-Forward Day! There will be a live broadcast online from 11AM – 4PM EST from the new state-of-the-art Jarden Home Brands headquarters in Fishers, Indiana. *Update 8/1* due to technical difficulties the live webcast is unavailable. The Can-It-Forward Day video will be available at 9AM EST tomorrow (8/2) to tune-in and watch at any time!
International Can-It-Forward Day celebrates the joys of fresh preserving and encourages gardeners and food enthusiasts across the country to celebrate what “Made From Here” means to them by fresh preserving their favorite local ingredients in peak season. The webcast will have an integrated chat function where viewers can submit their home canning questions to be answered in real time. Plus there is a new great event this year – a celebrity mason jar auction (from reality stars to celeb chefs) unveiled during the webcast! You definitely don’t want to miss out!
For my review, I received a variety of products to re-introduce me to canning and help make it easier!
The products I received are:

  • Ball Canning Discovery Kit
  • Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving
  • Design Series Lids in Red
  • Ball Fiesta Salsa Mix

Start Canning with Ball Canning
I am loving the Ball Canning Discovery Kit. It really does simplify the canning process. You simply open it up, follow the instructions to assemble the canning rack, and you’re ready to go! It includes a Beginner’s Guide to Canning with recipes, too! I also love that the Canning Rack has three circles on the bottom to easily place the cans in it.
Something else I appreciate about the Discovery Kit is the detailed instructions for canning. It is really the perfect introduction to canning from the best way to fill the jars through storing (and enjoying) your foods. I honestly didn’t know canning was this easy – as easy as boiling water! I guess I expected it to be more intensive with specific equipment. I’m glad to know that’s not the case!
Of course, I’m also thrilled to receive the Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving which has over 500 recipes! It also includes very detailed information about canning even explaining the entire process. It’s amazing information! The recipes are broken down into categories like Fruit and Juices, Tomatoes, Soft Spreads, Pickled Foods, and so much more! I can’t wait to put the recipes to use!
The red lids are so neat and really dress up the jars. Red happens to be my favorite color as well, so I am loving the look! They seal and work just like the lids included with the jars.
I also love the introduction to some of Ball’s Mixes! I had no idea they offered them! Now I know where I can order simple mixes to make my canning recipes easier! I read over the ingredients in the Fiesta Salsa Mix and was glad to see just vegetables and spices and not any questionable ingredients!
Overall, I am loving the Ball products and can’t wait to get canning with the rest of our produce! I’m also looking forward to Can-It-Forward Day and all the great information in the broadcast!

I love the bell jar wedding ideas too! Did you see the Mason Jar Table Lanterns? They were so cute. Really great ideas for all sorts of uses for them.

I want to live in the city after college, just for a few years, but I really want to do canning so I can eat healthy foods for less.

My husband and I used to can, but we had the big bulky pan and metal canning rack. Took a long time. I would love to have the instruction book!!!! I would be canning until the sun came up and the roosters were crowing!!!

I have not tried canning before but I really want to try that this year. We have lots of berries and grapes which my husband and I made our own wine that past two years. I would like to try canning now.

I love canning. It is such a fun process, and I love that I am able to preserve our garden veggies. It is a whole family affair. We all help out and then all get to enjoy the cans during the winter.

I have always wanted to learn to can. There is a story in our family about how my mom toiled over dozens of cans of homemade tomatoes and then they all MOLDED and she had to toss them.
That being said, I still want to try it myself and I think canning it forward is such a neat idea!

I like the canning, it makes delicious sense. I appreciate the flavor that much more when we can it and enjoy it.
