None Like Him {Book Review and Giveaway}

May 11, 2016 by Emilee Evans

I was recently introduced to the work of Jen Wilkin by our Women’s Bible Study group at church with her Study of Hebrews. Unfortunately, I fell behind, but I have been working on it at home, and I just love the way it’s presented and how she encourages us to study God’s Word. When I was given the opportunity to review the Jen Wilkin book None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us (and Why That’s a Good Thing).

Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this Jen Wilkin book review. In None Like Him Jen Wilkin she shares how God is self-existent, self-sufficient, immutable, eternal, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinite, sovereign, and incomprehensible. We are not, of course, and she goes into detail about each of these characteristics and, of course, relates personal stories and scriptural reference. I knew right from the Introduction on Becoming a God-Fearing Woman this book would be a huge blessing – not just for me, but for any woman who reads it.
What I found really makes this book unique is it’s not just a book you read through (although just the text alone is a blessing). She encourages us to dig deeper. She provides verses for meditation, questions for reflection, and a prayer. I have particularly found the questions helpful because, I admit, I often read through things quickly and then realize I didn’t actually take in everything I just read. With the questions, I’m challenged to really dig in to the meaning of the chapter – not just the words.
Overall, I am so glad I had the chance to review this Jen Wilkin book. I love the way it presented and encourages us to dig deep in the meaning. It not only helped me realize who God is, but also why I’m not those things, and why I don’t have to be. I think the Conclusion “Fearful and Wonderful” really helps bring it all together. We need to embrace our limits in light of our limitless God.
None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different from Us (and Why That’s a Good Thing) can be purchased on Amazon. The paperback book is beautiful, and it’s available for Kindle as well.

Bible Studies for Children on DVD {FishFlix.com Review}

March 24, 2016 by Emilee Evans

When considering Bible Studies for children to include in our homeschool, it’s definitely important that we use something the children enjoy and is presented in a way that is engaging and easy to follow. We had the opportunity to introduce Volume 1 of the Theo stories in our homeschool thanks to FishFlix.com.
FishFlix.com Review
FishFlix.com offers a variety of great Christian movies for all ages. There are movies for both entertainment as well as for teaching purposes. Because they are all faith-based, it’s a great resource knowing what they offer aligns with our values and beliefs.
Theo, God’s Love DVD is the first Volume in a series of Bible studies for children on DVD. The series was born out of a desire to help teach children of all ages Biblical principles. This Home Edition can be used at home with multiple children of all ages.
FishFlix.com Review
We have been using Theo, God’s Love DVD with all three of our children (ages 9, 8 and 5) as part of our Bible Study time in our homeschool. Theo, God’s Love DVD offers three family Bible studies for children presented through video lessons, Scripture references, Discussion Questions, Family Activities and Nightly Devotionals. Each lesson also includes a Final Thought and Closing Prayer.
While much of the lesson is completed through the watching of the videos, it includes a great Parent’s Guide for the additional, hands-on and interactive portions of the lesson. In the Parent’s Guide are the various activities and devotionals. It’s very easy to follow both as the parent presenting the lessons as well as the children.
Each video lesson is about 9-10 minutes and is presented by Theo, a theologian who knows the Bible well. In each lesson there is a situation or problem presented. Theo then presents a related Bible verse in the form of a story theater. He tells about the Bible verse through this fun presentation and then it’s explained how it’s related to life. There are additional characters, such as his mice friends, that relate the lesson through their own lives. It’s really a great way to present the lesson as kids learn a related Bible verse as well as see how it relates to our lives.
Lessons in Theo, God’s Love DVD include: Saving Faith, Loving Obedience and Forgiveness.
Bible Studies for Children - FishFlix.com Review
Following each lesson we went over the Discussion Questions together as a family. The questions offer a way to be sure the kids understood the lesson. There are 5 questions, and it only takes a few minutes to go over them. I take additional time, though, to just fully discuss what each child got from the lesson.
The Family Activity can take a various amount of time depending on how many people you have in your family. They are interactive activities to really reinforce the lesson. Although there is no set day mentioned to do the Family Activity, it seems the flow would make the most sense to do it after the Discussion Questions because the Final Thoughts and Closing Prayers follow.
For the Nightly Devotional, we would start Day 1 that evening before bed. We would then complete Days 2-6 on the following evenings (so Tuesday – Saturday). The devotionals on days 1-5 include reading a Bible verse with discussion and/or questions. We generally spent 10-15 minutes on the devotionals.

Bible Studies for Children

Overall, I think Theo, God’s Love DVD is a great way to teach Biblical principles in a way that kids enjoy and understand and offers a great guide to help parents further instill these principles. I love that this series is offered on FishFlix.com as well as many other great Christian movies.

Every time “Good, Good Father” comes on the radio, I turn it up and sing along. I love to just take in the lyrics. I feel like it not only really puts into perspective who God is for us, but also who we are to Him. How blessed are we to be loved by such an amazing Father?
Chris Tomlin Good, Good Father
We are surrounded by this world telling us both what it believes God is and even telling us who we are. It can be hard to shut all of that out. Patterns of Evidence Exodus {Review}

August 4, 2015 by Emilee Evans

When it comes to the timeline of Biblical events, there are a lot of questions and many scientists would say there are also discrepancies. This is particularly true of the Exodus – one of the most amazing and key events in the Bible. So what are believers to do? I, personally, just believe the Bible as fact, but filmmaker Timothy Mahoney wanted to take it to the next step. He starts with the questions, “Is the Bible just a myth, or did the archaeologists get it wrong?”

Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.
The questioning of the Exodus dates back more than 50 years. In fact, many prominent archaeologists and historians not only proclaim that there are no hard facts of the Exodus, but that the archaeological record is completely opposed to the Bible’s account. The fact that Timothy Mahoney decided to search for facts is phenomenal. There will always be diversion between scientific skeptics and those who believe the Bible to be true, so I love when someone challenges this notion of untruth and digs for true evidence of Biblical events – and finds it.
Patterns of Evidence Exodus does just that. Timothy Mahoney travels around the world to search for solid patterns of evidence of the Exodus and uncovers a lot of truth. It is the most in-depth archaeological investigation into the Exodus from Egypt ever captured on film. What I love is the purpose of the film is to communicate the TRUTH of the Bible and help equip believers with defending their faith and the Bible.
View the full trailer of Patterns of Evidence Exodus.

This film had my husband and I both amazed. The patterns of evidence they found is absolutely amazing, and the way they describe the discrepancies really makes so much sense. They shared evidence from all kinds of people from archaeologists, people of faith, scientists, historians, Egyptologists and more.
The evidence they found is amazing. One very specifically described the Hebrews living in Egypt from their professions to the physical appearance, 12 tribes from the North, and even their tombs (like a prominent tomb for Joseph where the statue is even wearing a coat of many colors).
What I found so fascinating is how the events just match up so well with the Bible’s account. The only thing that is “off” is the timeline, and there are even many reasons why it could be this way from the fact that we based time on the Egyptian timeline, which may be off to the fact that there may be misunderstandings – particularly that the Exodus happened during the reign of Rameses.
This was just assumed because the land is referred to the land with his name. Does this necessarily mean it happened during this time or because the information was translated later to use the city name as it was known at that time rather than what it was called at the time of the Exodus? In fact, even if you look at exact times in the Bible, there is no way the Exodus could have happened at the time of Rameses II. If you’re looking in the wrong time, you can’t find any evidence!
What I found most fascinating is one of the more prominent Egytologists, David Rohl, (who is agnostic) has uncovered some of the best information of the Exodus and has a lot of evidence the Exodus did, indeed, happen. I find many of the Egyptologists and archaeologists are biased because they don’t want to believe what happened in the Bible did actually happen, so it was very unique to see someone who is agnostic supporting and helping to uncover the patterns of evidence of the Exodus.
Overall, I think this is a fascinating film. Although Timothy Mahoney is Christian, the film is presented more as a documentary and really doesn’t have a bias one way or the other. It simply presents the research and things they have uncovered and it even contains interviews of those that don’t believe it happened. They did not edit it in a way to make it seem only one-sided but rather presented all the facts. They truly set out to uncover and discover the evidence.
