It's Time for Summer Camp!

June 7, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign with New Creative Media. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
Summer Camp
It’s that time of year when parents start to wonder what they should do for the summer. Keeping education fresh and keeping kids engaged in activities that are both fun and offer enrichment is helpful, and it keeps them from getting bored, too!
We homeschool year-round, so although we homeschool through the summer with our regular schedule, I have definitely been looking at summer camps now that our children are older. It can enrich our homeschooling as well! There really are so many benefits!
So what are you doing this summer? Well, the Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center offers summer camp options for Pre-K – High School. There are classes for theater, visual arts, and Pre-K.
Summer Camp
The first classes begin Monday, June 9th with the last available class beginning August 18th. You can enroll in one or a few! With so many classes there is so much flexibility! Because some classes have such a broad age range and more than one class runs at the same time, you can work it out so all children go at the same time! See the full summer camp schedule.
As you can see, there is quite a variety! Your kids can really stretch their creative muscles! Whether they like art, stories, theater, or even behind the scenes theater work, there is something for everyone! I love that it focuses on fine art because I feel like that is one subject we don’t work on enough!
Are you ready to get started? Visit the KVPAC Website to get registered today! Some classes are already full, so be sure to register before they all fill up! Class prices vary.

Color Fun Fest 5K #EPICTour

May 8, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received registration to the Color Fun Fest to facilitate my post. Regardless, all opinions are my own and those of my family.
Color Fun Fest
The Color Fun Fest 5K is making their way through the US! Color Fun Fest 5K is a day and night color 5K with EPIC Finish Line Festivals. This past weekend the Color Fun Fest 5K stopped in Houston, and my husband and I were excited to check it out!
Because we both have physical challenges, we weren’t sure we would be able to run the entire 5K, but we were both determined to finish it – even if we had to walk. What I loved most, though, is that The Color Fun Fest is so inviting. There is no pressure to run it all and it’s family-friendly! There were many there with young children and strollers. The kids there were having so much fun I almost wish we had decided to take our kids, too! Since they have sensory concerns, though, I was worried about how they would be with the color powder, so we opted not to.

Color Fun Fest
Getting Ready!
After actually being there and participating in the Color Fun Fest, though, I realized it really is welcoming for everyone. If you want a lot of color or just a little (but what fun is that, right?) you can actually set yourself up for either. Those who didn’t want as much color would run in a way to avoid the splashes of color, and those who wanted a lot stopped and got covered with it! It was so much fun. People were picking it up and throwing it on their friends and family members and some even rolled around in it!
My husband got a little more color than I did because I was shielding my face. I figured getting it on my contacts wouldn’t be a good idea and I forgot my sunglasses! If you really want to enjoy Color Fun Fest to the fullest I totally recommend sunglasses and wearing the shirt they provide with your packet. Then just get in front of all the color you can! Many also wore fun, colorful outfits to add to the ambience. I loved it!
Color Fun Fest 5K
The Color Fun Fest also had great entertainment. There was a live DJ and the announcer was a blast! He really knew how to work the crowd and get everyone pumped up both before we began and at the EPIC Finish Line Festival! It really was amazing! We saved our color packets until the Finish Line Festival so we could celebrate with a bang! They had various times for the Finish Line Festival so those that may still be finishing can participate in the next one. There were three different celebration times, and we just gathered together and shook our color everywhere! What a celebration!
Color Fun Fest Finish Line
We finished in just under an hour, so we were in the first celebration! We did have to walk most of it, but we finished without stopping and we had a BLAST! This was my first 5K, and it was an amazing experience. We didn’t have a chance to stay for the night run, but it looks awesome! They break out the black lights and more color! I will definitely be looking forward to the next time they roll through Houston.
Color Fun Fest Finish
Do you want to know when the Color Fun Fest EPIC Tour will be coming near you? Check out the Color Fun Fest 5K Locations and get registered! If your event is further out, you can Pre-Register to save your spot! One thing is for sure – you don’t want to miss it!

2014 McDonald's Houston Children's Festival

March 31, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Houston Children's Festival
Disclosure: Our family received tickets to the event to facilitate our review. Regardless, all opinions are our own.
This past weekend we had the opportunity to attend The McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival, the Largest Children’s Festival in the United States!
We always like to have a “plan of attack” in advance assuming we won’t be there for more than a couple of hours, which is pretty normal for our family given our special needs. Our number one “must see” was Sid the Science Kid, and it turned out that the whole science area was a blast! We played with different science experiments, robotics, and got information on science summer camps as well as homeschool programs!
Houston Children's Festival
We also got to see a few performances from the Big Top Circus. We watched a motorcycle on a high wire as well as motorcycles in a cage. It was so exciting! While we were watching them, we had a blast trying a new volcano drink. The kids loved that it looked like the drink was smoking like a volcano.
Houston Children's Festival
Something that is really nice, is that the McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival not only is a fun time for families, but it also benefits a great cause as well! The McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival benefits Child Advocates, Inc. The Festival has now raised over $4,700,000 for Child Advocates, Inc.!
There were various vendors, and each offered different activities, information, and more! It was a great way to check out some of the other businesses and find available events in the area that we hadn’t heard of before!
Food, drinks, and rides could be purchased with tickets, so you could just get tickets when you first go in and not have to worry about it again unless you choose to purchase from the individual vendors. It’s a convenient way to “pay” without getting your wallet out every time. All Day Fun Passes were also available for unlimited visits to the rides and games.
Houston Children's Fest
Some of the other highlights of the 2014 McDonald’s Children’s Festival included:

  • 7 Stages of Music and Entertainment
  • Over 300 Activities
  • 11 Big Family Adventure Zones
  • And More! Check out the full Highlights of the Houston Children’s Festival

The McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival 2014 also featured: Debby Ryan – star of Disney Channel’s Jessie, China Anne McClain, from Disney Channel’s A.N.T. Farm, and Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba!
Were you at the 2014 McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival? What were the highlights for your family?

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign with the South West International Boat Show and New Creative Media. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
South West International Boat Show
Spring is coming, which means it is the perfect time to plan for some outdoor activities. The South West International Boat Show is coming to the Houston area and is a great opportunity to get your family out. For homeschooling families it’s also a great educational opportunity as well. The South West International Boat Show is Houston’s only in-water boat show! It will make its way to South Shore Harbour Marina in League City March 27-30, 2014.
The South West International Boat Show will feature over 200 vendors and a display of every type of both saltwater and freshwater vessels. All attendees will have access to Free Hourly Seminars throughout all four days, and boaters (regardless of experience) can sign up for hands-on, on-water training for both sail and power.
Boats
Did I mention educational opportunities? Homeschooling families will enjoy the Haai, Inc. Live Shark Experience. Not only does it provide opportunities to learn about sharks, but it also provides an opportunity for children to be involved in the show!
Another great opportunity is the Be a Diver Pool. Adults and children alike have the opportunity to learn the basics of scuba diving in a safe and controlled environment.
Of course, don’t discount the educational opportunity in learning more about the various types of boats as well!
