Eco-Friendly DIY Laundry Detergent

December 14, 2014 by Emilee Evans

*Update 5/1/2016: When this post was originally shared in Dec 2014, I was working on shifting my focus on Pea of Sweetness away from eco-friendly living so I could focus more on homeschooling, homemaking, etc., though eco-friendly would always be part of it as it’s a huge part of our lifestyle. I was moving it over to another blog I had at the time, Deals of Sweetness. Last year, though I sold Deals of Sweetness because I didn’t want to divide my efforts and felt like I want Pea of Sweetness to be all of who I am.
Originally this full recipe was shared on Deals of Sweetness, but I plan on rewriting everything step-by-step to share here on Pea of Sweetness, so stay tuned!*
Eco-friendly DIY Laundry Detergent
Of course, sometimes there is are things I’d love to share on both blogs, and this laundry detergent recipe is definitely one of those things! As homemakers we’re always looking for ways to improve what we’re doing around our home as well as things that are safer for the whole family. As I once posted, DIY isn’t always natural, and many use a popular recipe that includes both Borax and Fels Naptha – neither of which are safe options!
Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, though these are the products I use and recommend regardless.
So I worked with a few recipes that don’t include these unsafe ingredients and shared the one that has worked best for our family. Plus, it’s easy to make! The ingredients include:
1 Bar of Castile Soap
1 Cup of Wash Soda
1/2 Cup of Baking Soda
1/4 Cup of Coarse Salt
Lemon Essential Oil
If you love making your own products for cleaning and laundry, I will be sharing the DIY recipes I will share the posts here as well! If you’re looking for a truly safer alternative for laundry detergent, stay away from the recipes that include Borax, Fels Naptha, and other artificial ingredients.

I have always been loyal to the makers of Tide but I am going to try this. I pinned it on Pinterest so I’d have it. Thank you for sharing!

I have been doing a lot of DIY products for cleaning, I hate the chemicals in store bought products. I have been using Castile liquid soap for awhile now for general cleaning, or a solution of Dawn, water and vinegar for the shower. Works great! I have recently made my own fabric softener, now I have to do the laundry soap. Thanks for the recipe and Happy Holidays!

I like this. I’m very chemically sensitive and have to be careful about what I use. This sounds gentle and easy to make.
