Silicone Baking Cups Review
As I consistently try to reduce waste for a more eco-friendly lifestyle there are definitely a list of a few disposable products that still nag at me for which I need to find an alternative. Cupcake liners were definitely included in that list. When I saw the opportunity to try Little Gems Baking Cups by Sunsella I saw a solution to the disposable liners problem as well as an overall better way to bake cupcakes and muffins!
They are bright and colorful, sturdy, BPA free, Non-Stick, Dishwasher/Oven/Microwave and Freezer Safe, and, of course, reusable! The food safe silicone isn’t just BPA free, it is also phthalate and lead free and have been tested to be sure they meet FDA standards. They can handle temperatures ranging from -40′ to 446′ F. I saw potential far beyond just cupcakes and muffins!

For my review I received one box of Little Gems, which includes 12 Silicone Baking Cups. Although I knew they can definitely be used for more than just baking, I decided that since baking is the most common use, it is what I would do for the review, so I decided to make some gluten-free cupcakes!
I wanted to try out two different possibilities for baking with the Little Gems: using them in a Muffin Tin and using them by themselves on a baking sheet. Since they are sturdy I had a feeling they would bake just as well outside of a muffin tin, which is also another advantage over paper cupcake liners. Of course, I wouldn’t know if I didn’t try! Since my Muffin Tin only holds six anyway, it made it easy for me to divide them easily!

As you can see, they sit up quite nicely on their own! I decided to fill them as I usually would for cupcakes, which even then can be difficult for me to gauge. I’m kind of notorious for overfilling. So I was trying to be careful not to overfill this time! What I found convenient, though, is that when I made drips and dribbles in my attempts to stop myself from overfilling I could easily wipe up the extra so I wouldn’t have the baked over mess. It was easy to wipe off the extra around the edges of the cups.

Then I was all set to bake them at 350 degrees for about 18 minutes. I knew with our oven, though, it meant I should check them at the 15 minute mark. Unfortunately it doesn’t work very well and often burns the outside while the inside isn’t quite done. I was hoping since the Little Gems Silicone Baking Cups noted that it helps evenly distribute the heat it may help avoid this issue! When I checked at 15 minutes, they weren’t quite done, and when I got them out a few minutes later they were just slightly brown on the outside and done on the inside as well! Yay! A couple of the cups had run over (most likely due to overfilling on my part), but it was very minor and an easy fix.

The cupcakes that were in the muffin tin and the cupcakes that were on the baking sheet seemed to have baked about the same. There weren’t any obvious differences between the two. It is really convenient, though, that I didn’t have to wait for the first batch to get done so I could make the next!
The cupcakes came out of the baking cups really easily, and there definitely wasn’t any sticking. If you do happen to like the crinkled edge look on the cupcakes, it does still have a nice look to it. Just add the frosting and voila! I have some yummy gluten-free cupcakes that are baked evenly and no paper sticking to them or that I have to throw away! This makes the Sunsella Little Gems Silicone Baking Cups a great eco-friendly alternative!

You could also use Little Gems Silicone Baking cups for food dividers in Bento lunches, serving treats, snack cups, and more! How else would you use them?

The first recipe I would make would be cheesecake cupcakes. My Grandmother made these and they were delicious and gone in a flash.
