Real life is long on law and short on grace — the demands never stop, the failures pile up, and fear sets in. Life requires many things from us — a stable marriage, successful children, a certain quality of life. Anyone living inside the guilt, anxiety, and uncertainty of daily life knows that the weight of life is heavy. We are all in need of some relief.
Bestselling author Tullian Tchividjian is convinced our world needs a fresh encounter with grace.
I know this is so true for me personally. I have been feeling that pressure lately! My blog is a good example of that. I feel like there are so many standards or expectations. Plus, everybody expects something different. I don’t use enough scripture in my posts or have enough faith-based posts. I don’t have the right amount of content or enough of a specific type of content. My stats aren’t enough. I’m not interactive enough on my social media accounts. My pictures aren’t good enough. Etc. It’s exhausting, and it wears me down. There are days I don’t even want to do it. It’s all too easy to forget why I do it – for Him. This is what He has called me to do as a means to help support our family as well as bless others. And He loves me unconditionally.
One Way Love is not only a reminder of God’s grace, but is also the straight forward truth of this “one way love.” We don’t earn it – it’s a gift. The price has already been paid. All we have to do is accept it. Are we too caught up in “life” to accept it? I know I can be. I can be hard on myself. I have been so blessed by One Way Love because it reminded me to just let go and accept God’s grace.
Don’t get me wrong, I knew about grace, and I knew it was unconditional, but One Way Love really opened my eyes (and heart) to experience it at its fullest.
Something that really just spoke to me was:
The one-way love of God meets us in our failures. Our failures make His one-way love that much more glorious. What qualifies us for service is God’s devotion to us – not our devotion to Him. This is as plainly as I can say it: the value of our lives rests on God’s infinite, incomprehensible, unconditional love for us – not our love for Him.
Phew! That’s powerful and such a relief! Isn’t it?
I also love the chapter “Grace in Everyday Life” and loved “Grace and Personal Identity” as I mentioned I often struggle with being hard on myself. I often allow others thoughts/ideas/perceptions influence how I feel about myself. He speaks on how God’s one-way love frees us from the pressure to perform because we are everything we need to be. It is one of those truths that I know but haven’t buried deep enough in my heart. I am encouraged now to accept this truth!
I think One Way Love is full of points we need to hear. I think each person can really take something from it. I highlighted what really spoke to me because that is specifically what *I* needed to read right now, but I believe everyone may get something a little different. Regardless, you will be blessed!
