Nutcracker Music Game Review and Giveaway (ends 11/27)

This computer game gives children an outlet for exploring their own appreciation of music, while sharpening their listening and problem-solving skills and improving understanding of the basic concepts of music. The Nutcracker Music Game is a magical adventure that celebrates music by challenging kids through interactive participation and exciting game play. Kids develop sound discrimination, logical thinking, and memory skills and learn about musical instruments and music vocabulary.
I was very excited to try this game – particularly after finding out they have received so many awards! One thing that I have always found a little tricky is supplementing our homeschool lessons with music education. It’s not that I lack musical knowledge – I actually know how to play several instruments and have always been a “singer.” Because of our kids’ young ages, though, I wasn’t quite sure where to start! We have a lot of fun just playing music and talking about “looking for music everywhere,” and playing different music iPad apps. When I had them play this game, though, I was so surprised how thorough it was yet still a good fit for young children! It was fun, too!
Music Game
Our kids really love playing on the computer, so when there are learning benefits to it, all the better! The biggest downfall for me was The Nutcracker Music Game is not yet available for MAC (though it is in the works!). I have a MAC, which is my main computer, but the kids play on both of our computers. My husband has a PC, but I was nervous because he has video card issues. Thankfully, it had no problem running the game, and the kids had fun! They were also very focused on the learning portion of the game! It’s always fun to see their little wheels going! They also helped each other work together, which is always great! Even our little guy (age 2) was intrigued by it, though he obviously couldn’t be AS involved as our older two (ages 6 and 4), but he had fun pointing things out as well! I love how the game is set up not only for learning but as a challenge giving them something to work for and a huge rewarding feeling when they win a game and receive a magic key! The graphics are cute, and the navigation isn’t too complex. The instructions were very detailed yet to the point, which I think is very helpful for young kids. If they know the game they also have the option to bypass the instructions.
Another aspect of The Nutcracker Music Game I appreciate is the classical music and the story of The Nutcracker! I am a huge ballet fan and have seen The Nutcracker ballet many times! Every time I hear The Nutcracker music I get so excited! I also love that they learn not only music and a story but instruments as well! Overall, I was definitely not disappointed by The Nutcracker Music Game! I will also eagerly await when it becomes available for MAC as well!
