What does it taste like?

This is the big question. Forget about the Guarana other than the boost of energy you get from it you will not know it is in the jerky. Perky Jerky is jerky, not an energy drink so it tastes like jerky. If you don’t like jerky you will not like Perky Jerky but, for the life of me I can’t think of any reason not to like jerky so let’s just compare Perky Jerky to your run of the mill jerky you normally buy at the gas station or grocery store.
I’m actually a big fan of jerk and I even make my own jerky at home when the season and finances allow me to.
The first thing I do when I get my hands on jerky is to smell it. I need to smell the spice on the jerky and what I’m looking for is pepper. Good jerky needs a good peppery smell. I’m looking for the distinctive smell of white and black pepper and Perky Jerky has this distinctive smell. I don’t know if they used white and black pepper but the smell I’m getting from this jerky is a good one and I do see the list their ingredients as organic spices.
Texture is an important part of jerk. You don’t want to see a leathery, rubbery strip of meat. Jerky has to be good quality meat to begin with and cut properly before curing so that the result is easy to chew and not stringy. I like to pull on the jerky to see if it will break. If it breaks easily the meat was cut against the grain like it should be or the meat will resist being pulled apart. When I pulled on the Perky Jerky the meat came apart nicely with no sinew or nasty stuff that will result in meat chewing gum.
To keep the jerky moist it should be cured with brown sugar and a good quality vinegar and the end result should be slightly sticky to the touch so that you know that generous portions of sugar were used in the making of the jerky. That sticky exterior is what is preventing the jerky from becoming a tasteless meat stick.
As for the taste, I want my jerky to have a spicy tone but not hot spicy. I’m looking for the pepper again. I also want to taste the sugar and not just sugar but the slight hint of the molasses in the brown sugar. Other jerky manufactures use corn syrup and then have to add the molasses taste afterwards with artificial flavoring. Perky Jerky uses real brown sugar. Brown sugar is just sugar with a bit of molasses added to it so using the real thing might be more expensive but you can’t beat the advantages of using the right ingredients.
Over all Perky Jerky shines on all the key factors that I look for in a Jerky so I’m well impressed. I like to see a company take pride in its product and Perky Jerky has reason to be proud of their Jerky. As a jerky fan I will give Perky Jerky an 8 out of 10.
Why not a 10 out of 10? Well, as a jerk fan and a home jerker you never score another mans jerky higher than your own and considering I would score the Sasquatch a 3 compared to the Jerk Man I would say the Perky Jerky got a A+ from me on their product.
I love seeing American companies go out there with an idea and deliver a good product by putting quality before profits. Perky Jerky could have just made the usual jerky you see everywhere and they would have taken some market share but, they went the extra mile and made a quality product that they clearly take pride in and for good reason. Good job, Perky Jerky you have this jerker’s vote as being snack worthy in my house.
