Friends and Heroes Review and Great Summer Promotion!

July 30, 2014 by Emilee Evans

It’s summer, and for many homeschoolers that means it’s break time. We homeschool year-round, though, and I feel we do some of our best learning during the summer! Even though we do a lot more outdoors The Bible is always an important part of our homeschooling. In fact, I would say it’s the backbone of our homeschool. So when we were offered the chance to review the Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit Study 1 I was excited to check it out!
Friends and Heroes
Disclosure: I received the Unit Study 1 to facilitate my Friends and Heroes review. Regardless, all opinions are my own and those of my family. This post contains affiliate links.
Friends and Heroes offers cross-curricular Homeschool Unit Studies that are fun and easy to use! Plus they are easy to incorporate with your other homeschooling activities by providing material that can be adapted easily. As a homeschooler with multiple children, I can also appreciate that they provide materials that are printable and reusable! You can print materials whenever you need them and even for more than one child at the same time!
Friends and Heroes is also a diverse curriculum that covers a number of subjects such as: History, Creative Writing, Discipleship, Crafts, and Bible Study – all taught from a Christian worldview! There are many hands-on activities, certificates of achievements, and award-winning adventures and Bible stories on DVD your children will love! Friends and Heroes Homeschool Curriculum is recommended for ages 7-11.
Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit Study 1
We reviewed the Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit Study 1 with both of our older children. Our oldest son is 8 and our daughter is 6. They are both learning at a 2nd grade level. It’s not uncommon for me to teach our preschooler along with our older two children on certain subjects as well. Even if he can’t participate as intended, he can participate on his level. I found that was actually possible with some of this curriculum because he was very interested in the DVD and was eager to answer questions verbally. So right away I was excited by this possibility.
The Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit Study 1 includes two discs – a DVD and a CD-ROM with PDF files that contain the Student Manual and a Teacher’s Guide with internet links, background information and teaching support. I loved that it wasn’t files alone but also contained the links and all the helpful information. The Teacher’s Guide is thorough, and I feel it really helps me prepare by including all the resources I will need. I like to be able to prepare in advance, so that is something I definitely appreciate! It even helped me prepare with prayer – something I should always be doing but can often forget.
The Teacher’s Guide really lays out each lesson for me starting with Goals for the chapter and then providing a step-by-step suggested lesson. What I love is that it includes so much more than a simple lesson. I have the option to review the lesson, of course, as well as a corresponding art project, science lesson, craft, history/geography, Bible Study and memory verse and more. There is also creative writing opportunities which include putting together a journal. It even includes decorations you can use for the journal. Since our children aren’t writing independently yet, we have opted not to do this section. I considered having them copy what I write, but I decided we will come back to it when they are able to write independently and really enjoy the journaling experience.

I definitely appreciate the flexibility of this Unit Study. I can opt to have the children write answers to the comprehension questions, but I can also do it orally, which is what I chose to do instead of writing the answer and having them copy it. This allowed our preschooler to answer some questions, too! Some days we do all of the activities, and some days we only do a few. We have even come back to activities we didn’t initially do when we had more time.
Overall, I’m really impressed by the Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit Study 1. It’s thorough plus it’s enjoyable for the kids, which is always an advantage with young children! They learn so much better when they enjoy it! Plus I love the flexibility. It has been a great addition to our homeschool! Additionally, Friends and Heroes offers additional resources on their website including many free resources!
