Coziness for our Cats

March 20, 2016 by Emilee Evans

Cats love to be cozy. I find our cats in interesting spots sometimes all for the sake of being cozy. Our big Maine Coon is notorious for trying to fit into small spaces. Having a comfy area where they can rest is just what they need and love!
Tube Cat Mat and Bed Review

2-in-1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed

The Pets and More Tube Cat Mat and Bed unzips to convert quickly from a tube bed to a full size mat/bed. Cats can lounge or play in the tube and enjoy some comfy cozy time! It has an electrostatic plush material that attracts shedding hair to help keep floors and furniture fur-free. It has a self-heating thermal core to keep cats warm.
For our review we received the Pet Cat Tube, 2 in 1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed.
Tube Cat Mat
Bart, our Maine Coon, claimed the Tube Cat Mat right away. I had set it out on our table and zipped it into the Tube Mat to get a good look at it. We had to run a quick errand, and when we came home he was already snug in the Tube.
Because he’s a Maine Coon he is fairly large. He’s 15lbs, and I’m not sure of his height, but I know when he stretches up his paws easily reach the top of the kitchen counter. So he is pretty long, but he fits snugly. He loves it!
Tube Cat Mat Revew
The outer material is pretty sturdy, and the inside is nice and soft. It is easy to zip up and unzip so it can be used as a nice sized mat. Then the cats can even lay on it together! They both definitely favor the Tube Bed style, though. I love that it offers options!
Overall, the Tube Cat Mat has definitely been a big hit with our cats! It offers a nice, cozy space for quiet time and sleeping as well as a bed where they can cuddle with each other! It’s soft but sturdy and easy to wash as well because it’s machine-washable!
The 2-in-1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed can be purchased on Amazon.

Healthy Cat Food Made With Real Meat #NutrishForCats {and a Great Salmon Recipe for you, too!}

August 14, 2014 by Emilee Evans

I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of  Mom Central Consulting for Nutrish for Cats. I received a sample of Nutrish for Cats to facilitate this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.
natural cat food nutrish for cats
When it comes to feeding our pets, I want to feed them what is best for them. Just like whole, natural foods are good for us, doesn’t it make sense that it’s also what is good for them? Instead, many pet foods contain a number of fillers that aren’t healthy.
Our cat is part of our family, and I want to make sure he is eating a healthy cat food. He deserves a food with real meat! Because of this, I definitely appreciate Rachael Ray Nutrish. Not only does it contain real meat, but real meat is also the first ingredient. Bart appreciates it, too!
Nutrish For Cats Healthy Cat Food
Bart loves his Rachael Ray Nutrish for Cats. He particularly loved both varieties of the Wet Cat Food, but I also have never seen him gobble up dray cat food like he has been with his Real Salmon & Brown Rice. His favorite seemed to be the Tuna Purrfection.
Nutrish for Cats Natural Dry Cat Food is available in the Real Salmon & Brown Rice and Real Chicken & Brown Rice. The Nutrish for Cats Natural Wet Cat Food is available in the Tuna Purrfection, Ocean Fish & Chicken Catch-iatore, Chicken Purrcata, Lip Smackin’ Sardine & Mackerel, Ocean Fish-A-Licious, and Paw Lickin’ Chicken & Liver. Aren’t the names fun and clever, too? Plus, you can find it in many local stores that carry groceries.

Dinner For Two

To really drive the point home, we were provided with recipes featuring the ingredients that are in Nutrish for Cats. I decided to use the Salmon recipe since Bart is enjoying his Salmon & Brown Rice food. Our daughter was particularly fond of this idea and even asked if Bart could sit at the table with us when we eat it! Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room for that, but we both got to enjoy a tasty Salmon and Brown Rice dinner!
Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper

Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper recipe from the Kitchen of Rachael Ray

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of brown rice
  • 1 bundle watercress or upland cress (2 cups), stemmed and coarsely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), divided
  • 4 medium to large carrots or multi-colored farmer’s market carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch dice
  • 1/4 teaspoon all-natural liquid smoke
  • 1/2 cup dark amber maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 4 salmon fillets, skin removed (8 ounces each)
  • 2 teaspoons Old Bay seafood seasoning
  • 2 cups frozen sweet peas
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup chives, chopped
  • Salt and pepper

I, personally, didn’t use watercress or the Old Bay seafood seasoning. Instead I just left out the watercress and made my own seasoning blend with paprika, salt, and pepper.
Preparation
Prepare the brown rice according to package directions. When rice is done, fluff with a fork and combine with watercress leaves. (Or in our case, just don’t add watercress leaves.)
When the rice has been cooking for 5 minutes, pre-heat the broiler and heat a skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon EVOO, a turn of the pan. Add the carrots to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Sauté to tender-crisp, 6-7 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small pot, bring the liquid smoke, maple syrup and cider vinegar to a boil and reduce over high heat, stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Season the salmon with salt, pepper and Old Bay seafood seasoning (or your own seasoning preference). Heat the remaining tablespoon EVOO, a turn of the pan, in a large, ovensafe, nonstick sillet and cook the salmon top-side down, 3-4 minutes. Flip and pour the maple syrup glaze over the top of the fish and place under the broiler for 3 minutes to caramelize the glaze.
Add the peas to the carrots and heat through while the fish is under the broiler. Add the butter and chives to the veggies. When the butter has melted, turn off the heat.
Serve the salmon with peas and carrots and rice with watercress alongside.
This recipe serves 4 (though we stretched it to serve all 5 of us).
Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper from the Kitchen of Rachael Ray
Our “Dinner for Two” (or technically dinner for six) was amazing. I just love that Rachael Ray took pet nutrition to the next level by working with pet nutrition experts to offer amazing natural food for cats. Using real meat and cutting out all the junk is wonderful, and I’m glad to know our sweet Bart is eating something that makes him happy and is healthy, too!
Cut out all the fillers, animal by-products, artificial flavors or preservatives. Simple and healthy. A lesson from Bart – Sometimes it’s the simple things that make us happy!

SeaBuck 7 Pet Supplement Review

February 17, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received the products mentioned to facilitate my review. Regardless, all opinions are my own and those of my family.
pet supplements
When it comes to our pets’ health I’m always on the lookout for supplements that are not only beneficial but made with quality, natural ingredients as well. SeaBuck7 are 100% natural supplements made from premium, nutrient-rich Himalayan sea buckthorn berries. Sea buckthorn berries contain the highest concentration of Omega 7 to be found, which has proven to have a multitude of health benefits. Plus, something I always appreciate, they’re made in the USA.
Some of the noted benefits of Omega 7 include:

  • Digestive Health
  • Coat Health
  • Antioxidants

For my review I received the SeaBuck7 Dog Liquid Supplement, SeaBuck7 Cat Liquid Supplement, SeaBuck7 Omega 7 Oil Drops For Dogs & Cats and SeaBuck7 Skin Relief Stick.
SeaBuck7 Review
Both the Liquid Supplements and Omega 7 Oil Drops could be added to their food, which was the best and most convenient way to be sure both of them would receive their supplements regularly. Our cat (Maine Coon) receives 1oz. per day of the SeaBuck7 Cat Liquid Supplement as he is over 10lbs and 1/2 dropper of the Omega 7 Oil about 2 times per week.
Our pup (Italian Mastiff) receive 2oz. per day of the SeaBuck7 Dog Liquid Supplement because she is over 50lbs (well over 50lbs!) and 1 full dropper of the Omega 7 Oil about 3 times per week.
Omega 7 Dog Supplement
I generally pour a little food, add the supplements, then poor a little more food and mix it up. Neither pet has seemed to notice either way. They haven’t seemed more eager to eat after the addition nor have they shunned the food either. So it seems they generally just don’t notice it very much.
I started to notice improvements after about 2-3 weeks (and these have continued to improve). Our cat has a thick coat, and it is shinier and softer. He is generally healthy and doesn’t have digestive problems, so although I don’t notice changes, I feel good knowing I am offering him supplements that can support his immune system and digestive system as well.
Our mastiff has a short, coarse coat, and it’s her top coat that sheds rather than her undercoat – especially when she is stressed. I have noticed less of this and less flatulence which is a HORRIBLE problem. We are always looking for ways to help her digestive system because her stomach gets upset so easily, and the gas is a constant problem. To find something with natural ingredients that support her immune system and help her digestive problems as well is such a relief!
The Skin Relief Stick has also come in handy because our mastiff likes to “bury” her bones meaning she likes to hide it in a corner and pretend to cover it up. Because we have hard floors she often scrapes up her nose. The Skin Relief Stick is a great way to help heal the irritated skin on her nose.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get any good pictures of them for “Before” and “After” because they both make it difficult to get pictures! I have to grab candid shots. I did manage to get a shot after we have been using SeaBuck 7 of our cat’s shiny coat!
Bart
I’m definitely glad we were introduced to supplements with quality ingredients that the pets do well with and have so many positive benefits!

Cat's Pride Fresh and Light Litter {Review}

September 11, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Cat’s Pride. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating. All opinions are my own. For more information see my Disclosure Policy.
one-eyed cat
Our cat, Bartholomew, is a special part of our family. It’s been a little over a year since we adopted him. They were afraid he wouldn’t get adopted since he was born with only one eye. That didn’t matter to us at all, though! He has an amazing personality, and we just knew he would be the perfect cat for our family! We mostly call him Bart for short.
Bart turned one on Christmas Eve. He is still young and energetic, but he grew big so quickly! We joke that it’s because he eats our dog’s large breed dog food! He really has such a great personality and is wonderful with the kids and our mastiff! He has so many fun quirks and plays back and forth chasing games with our daughter. It’s so much fun!
With the joy of a cat also comes the not-so-joyful litter box. Unfortunately, we’ve had many litter box problems, too – particularly with the odor. It’s not only unpleasant for us, but I imagine it’s not very nice for him, either. We want to make sure he is happy as well! I have found a helpful solution to add to the litter, but overall I decided we need a completely new litter solution. The expense of the litter that we HAVE to get for the self-cleaning litter box coupled with the fact that it just isn’t an effective litter has just gotten too frustrating. So, I was excited to have the chance to try Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light litter.
Cat's Pride
For our review we received two 15-pound containers of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light Litter. We received Fragrance Free Odor Control and the Quick Action litter. Being an eco-conscious consumer I generally err on the side of caution when it comes to fragrance. This definitely is the case with our pets as well. They are part of our family, and our eco-friendly lifestyle most definitely applies to them as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Quick Action litter that is scented carries the seal of the American Humane Association. It states Cat’s Pride products offer safe and effective odor control without harmful chemicals or overpowering fragrances. It also means they do so without the use of captive live animal testing. That is something to be proud of!
I can contest that the Quick Action litter did NOT have an overpowering scent. In fact, it was a very light almost unnoticeable (but pleasant) scent. Although we did enjoy the Fragrance Free Odor Control as well, this subtle scent of the Quick Action litter won me over as being my favorite. Bart was happy either way. He much preferred the light texture of Cat’s Pride over the rough crystals we have been using.

Here are some additional Cat’s Pride fact:

Cat’s Pride is 25% lighter than other scoopable clay litters.
I found this to be true! For the size of container I definitely expected they would be heavier. Growing up with cats I have used many varieties of scoopable clay litters, and containers that large were definitely heavier. I loved how the texture of the litter was “lighter” as well.
Cat’s Pride is low-dust.
One of the things that I always disliked about clay litters was the dust. When it said “low-dust” I wasn’t sure what to expect. What is considered a normal dust level? I discovered it barely had any dust at all. In fact, I didn’t notice any!
Cat’s Pride is quick clumping.
The litter box is in our laundry room, so I don’t generally have a habit of checking in right away, but I was curious about this “quick clumping.” I have to admit I don’t know what the typical clumping time is, but I did notice it clumps right away, and it clumps well. I didn’t have problems when I would clean it out, which is always good because it’s mostly unpleasant to clean the litter box, so every little thing helps!
Cat’s Pride is the only litter recommended by the American Humane Association.
I already mentioned they are recommended by the American Humane Association, but the fact is they are the ONLY litter that is recommended by them.
Overall, we’re happy with Cat’s Pride, and Bart definitely seems happier as well! Although it’s unfortunate we can’t use it with the self-cleaning litter box I would much rather have a happier cat and less odor! Plus, with the the nice features of Cat’s Pride it really isn’t that bad to have to clean the litter box!
