Splash Math Review

November 13, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received the products mentioned to facilitate my review. Regardless, I only recommend products I feel would be good for my readers. All opinions are my own and those of my family.
Splash Math Review
You may remember this summer I share my review of the Splash Math 1st Grade App. Well, I am excited to share that Splash Math has brought their Splash Math Program online! Their recently launched website includes hundreds of skills from 1st through 5th Grade! In addition to the launch of the website they have also launched an updated app that syncs with their new website! The new app also includes grades 1st through 5th like the website! Any progress and rewards will be the same on both platforms! Splash Math uses an Adaptive Algorithm that finds a child’s true grade level with Splash Score. In this way, children can learn at their own pace, and all essential math skills are covered!

Because we already enjoy the previous Splash Math app we were eager to try the new Website and app! Although it is slightly different, there were many features that were the same, and the kids were really excited to get started! Although both of our older children (ages 5 and 7) are finishing up our First Grade year for our homeschooling year in the next couple of weeks I had them both work in the First Grade level so they could get a lot of extra practice, and to make sure we were really reinforcing the First Grade Math Skills before we move on to Second Grade in January. The First Grade level on the website doesn’t read the text like they were used to on the previous app, but this is a feature that is in the works! It turned out to not be that much of a challenge because the questions are pretty visual, and as long as they were aware of what category they were practicing they didn’t need much help with the questions.

Splash Math

As before, the kids enjoyed the rewards based system and loved playing the game at the end of the lesson. They were excited to have the Aquarium game with which they were already familiar, and they were excited to discover the new app also has a Jungle! I love that Splash Math offers rewards because it is motivation for the kids to practice their math and have time to play when they finish! The practice itself is also rewarding as they are constantly encouraged along the way from the hippo!
I love that I can access the children’s reports in the Parent Dashboard as well as receive emails with regular updates to see how they are doing, how they’ve used their practice time, skill performance, and more.
With Splash Math, our kids ASK to practice Math regularly. Generally we have been using it 4-5 times per week to supplement our homeschool Math Curriculum. It is a great way to get in extra Math practice that covers everything we’ve been learning, and they enjoy it as well! Plus with the app it’s portable, too! We can practice Math on the go or while we’re waiting at a doctor appointment!
I think Splash Math is a great addition to our Math curriculum, and it would be great for extra practice for children that attend private or public schools as well! *Update* As of 12/20/13 the prices for Splash Math have changed! New Pricing – $9.99 for one grade for one child or $29.99 for all grades for one child – for life-time! No subscription!

Little Pim Language Learning DVD Set Giveaway (ends 11/6)

October 23, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Welcome to the Little Pim Language Learning DVD Set Giveaway

Hosted by: Savory Savings

Sponsored by: Little Pim

Language DVDs

With our ever-changing world and commerce, it is more important than ever to speak more than one language.  The earlier we start a second (or maybe third?) language, the easier it is to grasp. So many people recommend starting with children from birth with hearing two languages to improve the integration of the language and over all comprehension.  Krista over at Savory Savings speaks Spanish fluently, while her husband does not know a perro from pero (dog from “but” – the conjunction people, not the other one!) She shared her thoughts on the Little Pim Language Learning DVD series over on her site and you can see how this DVD series, aimed at the 0-6 crowd can help build vocabulary in both languages and promote language confidence!  By immersing children in language during entertainment, they hardly notice they are learning and suddenly are using phrases in other languages!

Little Pim is currently available in the following languages:

  • Little Pim SpanishSpanish
  • French
  • Chinese
  • Italian
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Arabic
  • Hebrew
  • Russian
  • English
  • Portuguese

You can pick up a Little Pim language discovery set (4 DVD’s and a Little Pim Panda plush!) right now for under $35!  During the holiday season, Little Pim is offering 20% off with coupon code LPHOLIDAY!  If you can’t wait for online shipping, Little Pim in Spanish, French and Chinese languages can be found at your local Toys R Us!

Would you like to engage your little one in a new language?  Or perhaps you know a child that this would make the perfect gift?  Enter this giveaway to win a 3-pack of Little Pim in the language of your choice now!  This giveaway is open to US residents, ages 18 and older.  It will run from October 23, 2013 through November 6, 2013.

Super Simple Learning DVD Review

October 22, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received the product mentioned to facilitate my review. Regardless, I only recommend products I feel would be good for my readers. All opinions are my own.

Super Simple Learning

The Super Simple Learning DVD from Super Simple Learning features some of the best well-known children’s songs. We had the chance to review it, and I couldn’t help but find myself singing along as well! It includes some of their earliest videos to their most popular songs. Who doesn’t love Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?
Our kids have been LOVING Super Simple Learning DVD. I knew it would be perfect for our preschooler, but I didn’t expect that our 5 and 7 year-olds would join in the fun as well! They have had a blast watching it and singing along over and over again! What I like most about this DVD is not only are the songs fun and easy, but they really are a fun way to learn! Plus, with the video, it is even easier to soak in because there are fun visuals to go along with it! One song I hadn’t heard in a while but loved when I was young was Skidamarink, and I was so excited to sing it along with them!
Check out a little peek at the Super Simple Learning DVD:

With Super Simple Learning DVD our preschooler has been singing along to songs with the Alphabet (even one with sign language!), numbers, months, days of the week, concepts like open and shut, and more! Well, and we’ve been singing along, too, as I mentioned! I love that he is really enjoying them, though, and getting into the songs.
In addition to learning real-life concepts, he is also developing an appreciation for music because this is music he can really get into through singing and dancing. He has loved music ever since he was a baby, but his speech delay has made actually singing along with songs somewhat frustrating at times. The Super Simple Learning songs are just that – super simple. They are songs to which he can sing along! It is encouraging his language skills as well! Plus, it’s so nice to just see him enjoying and having fun!
I am definitely glad we were introduced to and had the chance to review the Super Simple Learning DVD as well as discover all the other wonderful resources Super Simple Learning has to offer!

Alpha-Phonics Review

Alpha-Phonics has taught many children to read including those with reading struggles and challenges like dyslexia. It can be used as a sole curriculum or a supplement. We have been using Alpha-Phonics as a supplement, though it makes up a majority of our older two children’s reading work.
Our oldest two children are ages 5 and 7 and will both be finishing up the First Grade in the next couple of months and moving on to Second Grade in the New Year. Because of their special needs they both need additional help with reading. It’s definitely been a challenge, and I was excited for the chance to try Alpha-Phonics.
For our review we received the Alpha-Phonics Primer textbook, CD-Rom, Companion Workbook, and Companion Readers.
Alpha-Phonics
The first thing I did was watch the instructional DVD so I knew what to do and where to begin. It’s pretty straight forward and explains more about the program and how to use both the textbook and CD-Rom. It explains the CD-Rom is like the textbook on the computer. It explained in detail why it doesn’t use typing because it can develop bad habits in young children since they tend to type incorrectly, and that can develop a bad habit. I honestly had never thought of this before, but that is so true. There is also an introduction in the Teacher’s Manual in the back of the textbook to read before beginning.
We mostly used the textbook rather than the CD-Rom. The only disadvantage I felt with the textbook is that the Teacher’s guide is in the back of the textbook, so I would have to flip to the back of the textbook then remember the instructions. Luckily, though, the instructions are basic and easy to follow. The CD-Rom does offer the advantage of reading everything out loud for you. I just find it harder to work all together around the computer, though. Plus we mostly use my computer for homeschooling at this time, which is a Mac, and the CD-Rom is PC compatible.
The Alpha-Phonics textbook does take a different approach to reading than other programs we have used, and it was something the kids did well with. It isn’t just teaching words and letter sounds – it really goes into depth about the alphabet and sounds – including articulation. In the first week they had not only learned more details about the alphabet itself and its importance but were also reading sentences! The textbook begins with a short vowel sound while adding various consonants. This consistency really helps to reinforce what they’re learning and definitely builds confidence. With our kids’ special needs a phonetic approach to learning reading is definitely beneficial. If they get loaded with too much information at once there is really no benefit because they then forget it all!
We are still working through the short vowel sounds with consonants but eventually will progress to consonant blends – first final blends than initial blends. Then we will move to long vowels. I like how the program has a progressive transition and offers a lot of repetition and practice to really instill both knowledge and confidence before moving forward. Such a distinct separation of the short vowel and long vowels is a huge benefit as this has caused frustration and confusion in the past.
Within a couple of weeks we started the first Little Companion Reader. There were some words in the reader they had to sound out, but in the Little Companion Readers it encourages you to lead them and never scold. Repetition is key! If any of us got too frustrated we would just stop and come back to it another time, but for the most part there was very little frustration. This was a pleasant surprise as reading has usually been a big frustration in our homeschool journey thus far.
We also worked some in the Alpha-Phonics and How to Tutor Phonics Companion Workbook, which they can begin after completing lessons 1-20 in the textbook (or CD-Rom). Each page after that will have the corresponding lesson on it, so you know when to do that page. The Companion Workbook is extra practice to really help reinforce what they have been learning. I found it is really helpful because our kids learn better with this type of reinforcement.
We use Alpha-Phonics 4 days a week as part of our homeschool curriculum. The number of lessons we do in a day does vary based on the lessons and how the kids do with each lesson. Sometimes we may only do one lesson and sometimes we may do more if they are doing really well and are ready to keep going. I pay close attention to how they are doing and use their cues to decide what is best. The lessons are not only very effective, but they are short as well! This helps to keep the kids on task and not feel overwhelmed.
Overall, I’m glad we have the chance to use Alpha-Phonics, and I can’t wait to see as the kids progress to reading more and more of the Companion Readers and then beyond! Alpha-Phonics is one of Cathy Duffy’s 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum, and I can certainly understand why. It has been a great addition to our homeschool curriculum!
