Educational apps for Holiday Travel

December 19, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received the That’s Baloney! app free of charge to facilitate my review. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
educational apps
The weekend before Christmas is just a couple days away. Are you preparing for a trip out of town? Whether by car or plane, kids get antsy quickly and we start to hear that all too familiar “Are we there yet?”question over and over again. Are you prepared to keep your child(ren) entertained? Many cars now have built in televisions like our SUV, but let’s be honest, just watching movies isn’t ideal when there are so many opportunities out there that are both entertaining and educational!
Educational apps are a great way to keep children both entertained and engaged in learning while having fun as well! I was recently introduced to Evanced Games. They offer a variety of educational apps. They strive on not only making learning fun but also creating fun from learning. They put a lot of work into making their apps fun in the way that kids want to learn!
For my review I received the That’s Baloney! download.
About That’s Baloney!:

Hungry for knowledge? Thatʼs Baloney! is the delicious trivia game that challenges your brain. Devour multiple game modes spanning grades 2 through 6 and five compelling categories – language arts, math, science, social studies, and mystery meat.

Our older two kids will be moving up to 2nd grade at the beginning of the New Year, but they aren’t yet at that reading level, so That’s Baloney! isn’t an app they could use on their own. Some of the questions were out of their level as well, though we did have fun sitting together and playing together. It really would be best for independent play for 2nd graders who can read well through 6th grade as noted.
When you begin That’s Baloney! you are able to enter in the names of each player. You can also choose their grade level and whether you would like to do 20 questions or 40 questions. The questions are random but very in subject as noted in the description. These are the “Sandwich.” You can also choose “Snack,” and choose a specific subject. I particularly liked this feature because some of the subjects, like Language Arts, were better suited for our children’s particular ages. It would also be a nice feature if your child needs additional practice in a certain area!
That's Baloney
With both the Sandwich and Snack it goes through a series of statements. The player has to decide if it’s true or if it’s “baloney.” If they get the answer incorrect they will get a pickle. The goal is to get through all the questions without getting too many pickles.
What I think is great about That’s Baloney! is that it really is fun! The questions are challenging, which is great, and the game is so unique. Every aspect about That’s Baloney! involves food. The answers you click are on ketchup and mustard, the baloney gets eaten after eat question (with really fun sound effects), and rewards are food items that get put in the refrigerator. You can check your refrigerator at any time to see the prizes that you have won!
I think That’s Baloney! is a fun, educational app that could definitely keep kids engaged and entertained for quite a while! I know we’ll continue to use it together until our kids get more proficient with reading and can play it on their own!
Evanced Games does also have apps for younger children as well (as young as age 4), so be sure to check them out! Their games are available on both the Apples App Store and Google Play.

Splash Math 1st Grade App {Review}

July 30, 2013 by Emilee Evans

Disclosure: I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. All opinions are my own.
Splash Math
The Splash Math 1st Grade App is a fun app that covers a wide range of math skills. It has 13 chapters with over 185 math skills. It is recommended for 1st Graders or those entering 2nd Grade.
Since our older two kids are both at the 1st Grade Math level they both got to use the Splash Math 1st Grade App. We downloaded it to one of the iPads. It allows you to create multiple child accounts so you can track each child’s individual progress, which is something that is important to me. I appreciate that a grade level program still offers that feature not assuming we would definitely only have one child at that grade level. We did create an account for our 3 year old as well who obviously is not anywhere near a 1st Grade Math level but just really enjoyed all the underwater creatures!
In fact, the fact that the app seemed to be a magnet to all three children actually concerned me. You know how much I love when learning is fun, but are they learning? I made it very clear to them that I want them to have fun but to really try hard to work on the problems and ask me for help when needed and that their little brother was obviously an exception. Well, that seemed a little silly because when I got their reports I was not only really amazed by how detailed each report is but I could also tell they were learning while having fun!
Wow, I really was impressed by all the areas the app covers! Although each child’s report is emailed to me I can also check it in the app itself through a parent dashboard. It shows me how much progress they have made in each chapter, their performance summary, strong skills, weak skills, and grade level.

Splash Math

Some of the problems were challenging for them because they have a hard time concentrating when other things are going on around them due to their special needs, so if they were unable to hear and understand what was being asked they may not be able to answer correctly. Because they aren’t proficient readers yet they couldn’t rely on reading skills to compensate. Luckily, though, Splash Math is set up in a way that it didn’t make them feel down or discouraged. For those that need a little extra work, there is also a scratchpad option to write out the problems.
Splash Math offers a points based rewards system, so the more you practice the more points you get! The best way to keep learning is practice! Although, there is a daily notification to remind us it’s time to practice, I generally don’t need it because they ask to use it!
Once they have had a certain amount of practice they get to go to their aquarium where they can use all their prizes. There are crabs, squid, angel fish, and clown fish. They all do something fun to interact with each other and with them! The more points they earn the more they can add to their aquarium and get accessories for it like anvils, food, etc. It offers a fun incentive to try hard to do well and earn points!
Overall, I am really impressed with the Splash Math 1st Grade app. It really covers so much material and the detail of the reports is wonderful. The fact that the kids enjoy it and are so motivated to use it that they ask me before I mention it makes it that much better! Since it’s an app it goes wherever we go! So it’s also something educational to keep them occupied during waits at the dr. office or pharmacy instead of just any old game or a video!
You can get the Lite Version of Splash Math to try or the Full Version to have all the features.
You can get Splash Math on Google Play as well!

iTooch Elementary School App Review

March 2, 2013 by Emilee Evans

iTooch
As a homeschooling mom I am always on the lookout for great educational apps! I have heard great things about iTooch apps, so I decided to check it out! I downloaded the iTooch Elementary School App. It starts at 3rd grade, and although our kids are in 1st grade, I figured it would still be worth a look because at the very least it would be something we could use later! The 3rd Grade Math and Language Arts were definitely too advanced for them, but I went over it myself to get a good idea what all it includes. I was really impressed by what was covered! I particularly loved the Language Arts because I have a huge appreciation for Language Arts, and I think it’s a key subject that easily gets overlooked. I was really impressed by the details it covers!
iTooch Elementary
The other subject offered is Science, and despite being the 3rd grade level, it was right up our alley! I had to guide them through reading the text, of course, but the subjects covered are subjects we have covered this year already, so it actually worked out very nicely for us! Plus with lessons attached we had the opportunity to learn more! So although they couldn’t do it on their own, they were actually able to answer the Science questions with my guidance and had a lot of fun with it!
iTooch
iTooch uses positive reinforcement to encourage learning, which is so important! Our kids absolutely LOVE that, and they loved watching the little guy act out funny things. I love learning apps that include a level of fun as well! It is very user friendly and includes tests with a variety of ways to answer the questions, so it isn’t all multiple choice, which I often see just leads to a lot of guessing! Each chapter includes lessons. They always keep their apps up to date and they comply with core standards.
The iTooch Elementary School app can be downloaded on the Apple App Store. I liked this app so much I decided to see what else they had to offer and found a fun “Recess” App and French as a Foreign Language, which was REALLY exciting to me as I’m teaching our kids French as well as teaching French in our homeschool Co-Op!
