Celebrate National Breakfast Month with Wholesome Breakfast Options

September 26, 2016 by Emilee Evans

Did you know September is National Breakfast Month? I love breakfast. Actually, our whole family loves breakfast! Quick, wholesome breakfast options aren’t easy to come by, though!
Good Food Made Simple Logo
Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate my post/review. Regardless, all opinions are my own and those of my family.
That’s why Good Food Made Simple fills this need with their wholesome frozen breakfast options. They offer options such as: breakfast burritos, breakfast bowls, cafe wraps, club packs breakfasts, egg white patties, pancake puffs and steel cut oatmeal. They believe in starting with fresh, wholesome ingredients, and not adding anything more than is absolutely necessary.
What I love is they truly care about the ingredients they use as well. The eggs are cage-free, the meats are free of antibiotics, and they use real cheese. Plus, they use organic ingredients whenever possible. They never use hydrogenated oils and steer clear of all the artificial stuff like artificial preservatives, colors, flavors and sweeteners.
For my review I received full product value coupons to try a variety of Good Food Made Simple breakfasts. I head to my local Kroger to pick up a few.

Wholesome Breakfast Options

Good Food Made Simple Wholesome Breakfast
We aren’t morning people. Ok, I should say some of us aren’t morning people. *Raises hand* This works for us, though, because we can start our homeschool later in the day. Our oldest, who is our early bird, can do some independent work while the rest of take a little longer to get up and around in the morning.
So for us, we need a quick and easy breakfast. We need a breakfast that will energize us and is healthy as well. Many breakfast options just aren’t healthy, though.
Needless to say, a breakfast I can make in just a few minutes that has ingredients that aren’t scary is a huge advantage!
Both the breakfast bowls and breakfast burritos are quick and simple to make. They can be ready in around 5 minutes!
The burritos have a flour tortilla and a variety of options including: Cheese & Veggie, Chicken Apple Sausage, Southwestern Veggie, Uncured Bacon and more! They really have a great flavor and are even easy to eat – no utensils needed! The kids really enjoy them! Especially our daughter who loves bacon!
I like the breakfast burritos as well, but I really like the breakfast bowls! The Turkey Sausage Breakfast Bowl is so good! I really enjoy the flavor, and it’s so filling!
Of course, I love that they are made with wholesome ingredients!
Good Food Made Simple breakfasts can be purchased at a store near you. Visit their Store Finder to discover where!
There are only a few days left in “National Breakfast Month,” but you can enjoy a quick, easy and wholesome breakfast any time of the year!

A Better Egg {And a Breakfast Burrito Recipe}

July 19, 2016 by Emilee Evans

When it comes to food labels things just aren’t straight forward anymore. I used to think buying “Cage Free” eggs was ideal until I learned what’s really going on. “Cage Free” no longer means the hens are treated humanely or have plenty of room to live naturally. Now it simply means they’re not in a cage. They can still be overcrowded in a small building, though. Talk about disappointing!
Nellie's Logo
Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate my review and recipe. Regardless, all opinions are my own and those of my family.
Nellie’s used to be known for having “Cage Free” eggs, but as that definition shifted they knew they’d have to find a better description. Free range eggs. Nellie’s treats their hens humanely and are even Certified Humane. Their hens have free range to scratch, dust bathe, and have real grass to peck. They have access to antibiotic free feed and fresh water at all times. Occasionally they are kept in a barn, but only if there is an outside threat, and yet they still have plenty of room to continue chicken behavior.
The hens at Nellie’s farms are never given feed with antibiotics or hormones. They truly get to live their lives as chickens are meant to, and the result is an overall better egg! Nellie’s Free Range Eggs are packed with 13 essential vitamins and minerals, high-quality protein, “good” fats and antioxidants, and all for just 72 calories each! Plus, we can feel good knowing there aren’t things like antibiotics and hormones and the chickens are treated humanely!
Nellie’s Free Range Eggs are available at a variety of grocers. Visit their Store Locator to find Nellie’s Eggs at a grocer near you!
For our review we received two cartons of Nellie’s Eggs, a great t-shirt and other swag and a gift card with the challenge to hunt down some ingredients for a recipe. The Nellie’s eggs we received are large brown eggs.
Nellie's Certified Free Range Eggs
As you may know, I’m a simple person. We have a pretty crazy life (and the past couple of months have even been crazier than usual), so I like to keep our meals simple as well. This also ensures even our picky eater will give it a try! So I decided we’d make some breakfast burritos with our Nellie’s eggs!

Breakfast Burrito Recipe

Breakfast Burrito Recipe
(This Breakfast Burrito Recipe yields 4 burritos)
Ingredients:
6 Nellie’s Eggs
1/3 Cup Milk
1/2 Pound of Ground Sausage (For this recipe I am using Lightlife Veggie Sausage)
1/2 TBS Coconut Oil
Pepper, Salt and Garlic Powder to taste
1 Tomato
1 Banana Pepper
4 Tortillas (Any kind will do. I used wheat, but if gluten is a concern corn tortillas would work as well)
Breakfast Burrito Recipe Ingredients
Directions:
Add 1/2 TBS of Coconut Oil to a non-stick skillet.
Add 1/2 Pound of Ground Sausage and cook until brown making sure to break it into small pieces.
Add spices as desired.
When Sausage is cooked thoroughly, add to a large bowl.
Using the same skillet (or optionally use a different skillet), add 1/3 cup of milk and 6 Nellie’s Eggs. Mix well until eggs are thoroughly cooked and fluffy.
Add the eggs to the bowl with the sausage.
Dice the tomato and banana peppers and add to bowl.
Mix well.
Add the mix to the tortilla.
Wrap and serve!
Breakfast Burrito Recipe Complete
This is a recipe the whole family loves! Having a few picky eaters in our family, though, but it easy enough to leave out the tomato and banana pepper (or even sausage) for some but mix it all up for the others. I grabbed a tomato and banana pepper straight from our garden, which was amazing!
Overall, I’m so impressed with Nellie’s Eggs. They are healthy brown eggs, and I am thrilled they are Certified Humane and really care about their hens. Plus they taste great!

Trying a Different Kind of Hot Dog

July 2, 2016 by Emilee Evans

When it comes to eating healthy, there are a lot of foods the kids love that ended up on our radar. Hot dogs are definitely in that category. Healthy and hot dogs generally don’t go hand-in-hand. I’ve searched for healthier options, but they are few and far between. When I was presented with the opportunity to try and share a meatless hot dog review I was really looking forward to it!
Lightlife Meatless Hot Dog Review
Disclosure: I received this product for free from the sponsor of the Moms Meet program May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet blogger, I agree to use this product and post my opinion
on my blog in my meatless hot dog review. My opinions do not necessarily reflect the opinions of May Media Group LLC or the manufacturer of this product.

Lightlife offers a variety of plant protein foods including their Smart Dogs – Meatless Veggie Hot Dogs. The Lightlife Smart Dogs are America’s #1 meatless hot dog and are great for summer cookouts! They are also vegan and Non-GMO Project Verified. Healthy plant proteins and no GMO’s? Definitely the healthier alternative I’ve been looking for! Plus, I could find them easily at Meijer, a store where I usually shop. I didn’t have to make any special trips for this healthier option.
Upon reading the label further I was rather impressed with the difference on the nutrition labels as well. We tried both the Smart Dogs and Jumbo Smart Dogs. Although they do have quite a bit of sodium it is still much less than a “traditional” hot dog. Plus Smart Dogs only have 50 calories each and 7 grams of protein! The Jumbo Smart Dogs only have 100 calories each and 13 grams of protein! I could eat four Smart Dogs for less calories than one traditional hot dog and receive about the same amount of proteins. I wouldn’t, of course, because they are rather filling, which is great!

Smart Dog Meatless Hot Dog Review

Unfortunately, since our daughter broke her arm our summer got kind of crazy. We haven’t been able to have our usual cookouts and am bummed to say I have yet to experience a Smart Dog fresh from the grill, but I am definitely looking forward to it! It does note they cook a little faster than traditional hot dogs, though I found it to be similar. I try not to overuse the microwave, but it’s been my friend for the past few weeks. I found the Smart Dogs cook much more evenly in the microwave than traditional hot dogs, and I never experienced any drying out or cracking. They even have a very similar look.
Here is a Jumbo Smart Dog just cooked from the microwave:
Lightlife Veggie Meatless Hot Dog Review
Although they appear similar, they do have quite a different texture. Their texture is a little more dense than a traditional hot dog. The taste is actually rather similar, though. I first tried them just plain so I could get an idea of their taste and texture. Our daughter did as well as she is our very willing taste tester.
We both agreed that although they taste similar there is a bit of a “veggie” aftertaste. It’s not overwhelming or so strong I would refuse to eat them, but overall, we both agree we prefer them on a bun with condiments. Even our boys ate them this way and didn’t mention a thing! They are both pickier (one I would even say is very picky), so this was impressive!
Overall, I do think the Lightlife Smart Dogs really are a great alternative to all those “scary” hot dogs out there! We aren’t personally a vegetarian family, but I love expanding our nutrition, and I definitely appreciate the benefits of plant-based nutrition. These are definitely hot dogs I will continue to serve our family as well as our friends when we can finally get back to our cookouts again!
One package of Lightlife Smart Dogs retails for $2.99 – $3.99. They are available at multiple grocery stores. In fact, they were available at two different stores here, and for a small city like this, that is actually quite impressive! Find out Where to Buy Lightlife products for your family!

Summer Flavor Without the Grill

June 26, 2016 by Emilee Evans

I can’t believe Independence Day is right around the corner! What are your plans? I don’t know about you, but we love a good cookout! Sometimes, though, it just doesn’t work out. The weather may be too wet or given our often crazy life, it just doesn’t work out. Now there is a way to enjoy all the flavors of summer without the grill!

Boulder Canyon Chips Review – Backyard BBQ

Boulder Canyon Chips recently introduced new and unique potato chip options that are great for summer entertaining. The new Backyard BBQ line is perfect for that BBQ flavor without the grill! This unique line features three varieties that remind you of your favorite BBQ meal- Grilled Brat, Sweet Corn and Peach Cobbler. Delicious, right? You can enjoy the delicious taste of a smokey-flavored brat, the home-cooked fruity flavor of Peach Cobbler, and the taste of sweet, buttery corn without the husk!
Summer Chips Giveaway
One of the disadvantages of living in a rural area is unique products are often hard (or impossible) to find. Although I haven’t had a chance to try these flavors, I think they sound amazing! I know I’d love to have them for one of our summer get-togethers!

Boulder Canyon Chips Review – Unique Oils

Are you looking for a healthy snack for your next BBQ? Boulder Canyon has also introduced three uniquely-flavored potato chip options that are cooked in premium, better-for-you oils. Coconut Oil Pineapple Habanero™, Olive Oil Sweet Vinegar™ and Olive Oil Red Chili™ kettle-cooked potato chips are cooked in 100% oils and are seasoned with clean, simple ingredients.
Boulder Canyon Chips Review Unique Oils
Although I didn’t find these exact flavors, I was still excited to find Boulder Canyon Chips cooked in unique oils. What I really find unique is that they’re aren’t just cooked in unique oils but have various flavors as well. We have particularly been enjoying the Sea Salt Chips cooked in Coconut Oil and the Malt Vinegar & Sea Salt cooked in Avocado Oil. What’s even better is that the kids like them, too! Plus, they really are a great conversation starter at get-togethers!
Boulder Canyon Chips Review Unique Oils
Overall, I think Boulder Canyon Chips are great not only for summer entertaining, but an anytime snack. I knew they were different when I had to go to the “healthy food” section to find them! Plus it’s always great when the kids like them, too! They’re definitely a big hit around here!
