If you are a homeschooling family like we are I’m sure you are always on the hunt for helpful homeschooling resources. SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a helpful website for homeschoolers by The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. Whether you are looking to build up your homeschooling curriculum or supplement it SchoolhouseTeachers.com has something for everyone! SchoolhouseTeachers.com has resources available from Pre-K through Highschool, so whether you have little learners or are preparing your teen for college (or everything in between) you will find something for your family! They have basic subjects like Math, Spelling, and History as well as many subjects and topics that are more difficult for which to find resources like Music – Voice, Filmmaking, and Special Needs.
When I first explored SchoolhouseTeachers.com I didn’t really know where to start! There is just SO much information! So, I took a look at our current curriculum and made notes of what I feel may need “more” and any subjects or topics I’d like to cover that is not currently in our curriculum. I started first in the Special Needs section because having 3 special needs children it’s not exactly something I run into often, but it’s something very important. I was very excited that they have a special needs section! The first thing that caught my eye was a resource called “The Student Education Plan as a Guide,” which talks about creating an SEP (Student Education Plan) for your special needs children. If you’ve ever received services through the public school system or the county you’ve probably had experience with an IEP. An SEP is the same idea, but to be honest, I hadn’t thought about writing one up, so I’m so glad I ran across this! It is easy to understand and pretty straight forward. The best part is after you write your SEP(s) there is more information to carry you through the process of setting short term goals to make progress towards your annual goals. They really fill in all the gaps. I was so pleased with the Special Needs section! SchoolhouseTeachers.com also offers downloadable planners, and I was happy to discover they have a planner specifically for homeschooling special needs children. This planner includes:
- Helpful articles written by special needs experts like Carol Barnier, Cynthia Ulrich Tobias, and Melinda Boring, as well as homeschooling mothers of special learners.
- Interactive calendars, planning pages, and household organization charts.
- Homeschool Individualized IEP, medical and therapy forms, and weekly food and behavior diaries.
- Task analysis cards to help teach life skills.
- And much more!
SchoolhouseTeachers.com also has a section called “Dailies,” which I find to be really useful. Again, there is something for every grade range and ability. There are daily spelling sheets, hands on activities, copywork, games, and more. We particularly like the spelling because this is an area that both kids need a little extra work. These help us fill in that extra gap easily! I love that these little things are right at my fingertips with a simple click on “Print.” I don’t have to make up my own or search the internet in hopes of finding some good printables. It’s all in one place!
Another resource we are now incorporating regularly is the French lessons. We use it 2 to 3 times per week. I was SO excited to see French lessons. I took French all through high school and college, so I know it, but I wasn’t quite sure where to start with teaching it! The French lessons on SchoolhouseTeachers.com gave me a great starting point, and now we’re using it regularly with our curriculum. My husband even sits in on some of the French lessons, so he can learn it, too!
Overall, I think SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a well-rounded homeschool resource that truly has the homeschooling family in mind. With all they offer and their vast variety there really is something for everyone! I’m very pleased with the wonderful resources I have found, and I know I’ll continue to add more resources as our kids progress through the grades.
