I received the Melissa & Doug Let’s Play House! Grocery Basket with Play Food for our kids to review, and we were all really excited to check out our new Pretend Grocery Basket with Play Food! I absolutely love Melissa & Doug Toys, and any toys that encourage the kids to use their imagination are a favorite here in our house! The Let’s Play House! Grocery Basket with Play Food comes with play food boxes and play food cans with removable lids as well as a nice wire basket for playing with and storing the toys!
Our kids definitely let their imaginations take flight whenever they play with the play food and basket. I’ve seen a few variations of ways they play with this toy:

• Grocery Shopping. One will be the cashier (usually one of the older 2) and the others will be customers. They find all kinds of different things to exchange as “money.” They get some practice with their math skills, too, when they count the items and the “money!” We don’t have a pretend register, but that didn’t stop them from pretending they had a cash register! This has definitely become one of their favorite games.
• Around the house. They also like to play with the play food and basket as if they were doing things around the house – putting away groceries, cooking, etc. Somehow it always seems the living room becomes their “kitchen” when they play this way.
• Another favorite – picnic. As you can see below they like to gather other toys around and put Aurora’s blanket on the floor to play picnic. The grocery basket became the picnic basket. Each item is already made and ready to serve at the picnic. Fun, right?

That is probably my favorite thing about pretend play – they come up with so many different ideas! The Let’s Play House! Grocery Basket with Play Food has definitely been fun for all of them (including our toddler!), and I’m sure they’ll come up with more ways to play with it as well! I love watching them as they think up new games and ways to use the toys, and the grocery basket with play food has definitely been a hit in our house!
