Coziness for our Cats

March 20, 2016 by Emilee Evans

Cats love to be cozy. I find our cats in interesting spots sometimes all for the sake of being cozy. Our big Maine Coon is notorious for trying to fit into small spaces. Having a comfy area where they can rest is just what they need and love!

2-in-1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed

The Pets and More Tube Cat Mat and Bed unzips to convert quickly from a tube bed to a full size mat/bed. Cats can lounge or play in the tube and enjoy some comfy cozy time! It has an electrostatic plush material that attracts shedding hair to help keep floors and furniture fur-free. It has a self-heating thermal core to keep cats warm.
For our review we received the Pet Cat Tube, 2 in 1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed.
Tube Cat Mat
Bart, our Maine Coon, claimed the Tube Cat Mat right away. I had set it out on our table and zipped it into the Tube Mat to get a good look at it. We had to run a quick errand, and when we came home he was already snug in the Tube.
Because he’s a Maine Coon he is fairly large. He’s 15lbs, and I’m not sure of his height, but I know when he stretches up his paws easily reach the top of the kitchen counter. So he is pretty long, but he fits snugly. He loves it!
Tube Cat Mat Revew
The outer material is pretty sturdy, and the inside is nice and soft. It is easy to zip up and unzip so it can be used as a nice sized mat. Then the cats can even lay on it together! They both definitely favor the Tube Bed style, though. I love that it offers options!
Overall, the Tube Cat Mat has definitely been a big hit with our cats! It offers a nice, cozy space for quiet time and sleeping as well as a bed where they can cuddle with each other! It’s soft but sturdy and easy to wash as well because it’s machine-washable!
The 2-in-1 Tube Cat Mat and Bed can be purchased on Amazon.

Fun Personalized Pet Accessories

August 12, 2015 by Emilee Evans

I think I’ve shared many times how much I love personalized products. I’ve also shared how much we love our pets as they are part of our family. So I was definitely excited to see the personalized pet accessories by Hot Dog Collars.
Hot Dog Collars
Disclosure: I received complimentary products to facilitate my review. Regardless, all opinions are my own.
Hot Dog Collars is the worldwide leader in online pet accessories including dog collars, ID Tags, Licensed Pet gear, and more. Their mission is “happy dogs and happy owners,” and it carries on through their new RUFF (Rescue Us For Freedom) program. They are partnering with charities, pet rescues and shelters, and similar groups to spread the word about these great organizations and the work they do. They reach millions of dog owners every year and expect the impact on the selected organizations to be significant.
As a former dog trainer and pet parent of rescued pets, I can really appreciate this!
For our review, we received a personalized dog collar, Dog Leash, and RubIt HEART Dog Tag Clip. We also received a couple of treats with our package!
Personalized Pet Accessories from Hot Dog Collars
I was really impressed by the variety of prints available for the collars and leashes. Our pup, Caprice, is a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) and weighs in at 125lbs. Finding cute collars in her size is always a challenge. If I don’t find something really cute and girly, everybody refers to her as “he.” So I like to make it obvious she’s a “she.” So I chose both a pretty collar and cute leash!
Of course, I also love that her name is right on the collar, so if the pretty collar isn’t a clue maybe her name will be! The Large collar is a nice size ranging from 20″ – 28″ which means it will actually fit many large breeds. It is a 1″ width and opens and closes with a quick clasp closure (also referred to as a side release clasp). It is a nice, sturdy collar. The only issue we had is because she is itching so much right now due to her allergies, the collar kept getting loose and I would have to readjust it. I have been informed this isn’t a common problem.
Personalized Dog Collar
The RubIt HEART Dog Tag Clip is amazing. In fact, it was just what we were needing. We got a beautiful tag for her a couple months ago, and I just couldn’t put it on the collar. It was so difficult. The tag loops are so large on the bigger collars it’s hard to get those little rings on it. Now I am able to attach it to the tag clip, and it slips easily onto the collar. It’s easy to remove as well. This is one of those products I wish I had known about sooner!
Tag Clip Hot Dog Collars
I absolutely love the owls and flowers on the leash. The leashes also have various sizes, so I chose the large, of course. It is a really sturdy material with a traditional clasp. It has a loop handle and feels nice in my hand. At 5′ long, it’s a great leash for both casual walks, runs, and even training.
Owl Dog Leash from Hot Dog Collars
Overall, I am loving the Hot Dog Collars products. They are well made, look great, and there are so many great options. The variety of personalized products available is so nice. Not only can you find accessories that look nice, but they can be unique specifically for your pet!

Making Your Home Kitten Proof

July 25, 2015 by Emilee Evans

A couple weeks ago we got a new kitten. Our daughter was particularly thrilled because she has been wanting a kitten for a while. Since we’re finally a little more settled, we thought it would be a good time. Lily (the name our daughter gave her) is a sweet little kitten, but like most kittens, she’s very curious and into everything.
Making Your Home Kitten Proof
So how do you make your home kitten proof? Here are a few tips that helped us.

Make the Litter Box Location Known

Depending on where you got your kitten, they may not be familiar with the litter box. Even if they are, they need to know exactly where it is or they may use the nearest blanket, pile of clothes, etc.

Kitten Toys

When I say kitten toys, I don’t even mean you have to buy those fancy toys at the store. Kittens are pretty happy to play with anything – strings, boxes, tape, other pets, kids, etc., but make sure there are plenty of those things to play with so they turn to things like the furniture.

Close Up Unsafe Areas

We used to have the litter box in our half basement, but it’s just not a safe area for a kitten. Our other cat would just go downstairs, use the litter box and come back up. A kitten is more likely to look around and maybe get into things she shouldn’t. Plus, with all the rain, the basement is damp and mucky – not a good place for a kitten to play!
We also found we needed to block the opening in the stairway that is quite a steep drop. She curiously was sticking her head out of it, and we feared she would fall down, so we simply blocked it so there is no longer a danger. Also be sure to check for little holes and spaces where a kitten might fit. Our other cat is rather large, so we had to reevaluate because our kitten is much, much smaller.

Tie up Loose Wires

Loose wires are very attracted to wires. This can be dangerous for many reasons. They could chew through one or end up pulling down the appliance to which it’s attached! Wires can be tucked behind furniture, grouped together with zip ties, taped or stapled to walls – whatever works for your home and space.

Proper Introductions

If you have other pets, be sure to give them a proper introduction. We have a dog and cat and used the open barrier method where they could sniff each other with a barrier in between. Introductions went well, so we knew we could remove the barrier and let her explore her new home!

We are so excited and blessed to welcome Lily to our home and so grateful the transition has been smooth. What have you done to prepare your home for a new pet?

Healthy Cat Food Made With Real Meat #NutrishForCats {and a Great Salmon Recipe for you, too!}

August 14, 2014 by Emilee Evans

I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of  Mom Central Consulting for Nutrish for Cats. I received a sample of Nutrish for Cats to facilitate this review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

When it comes to feeding our pets, I want to feed them what is best for them. Just like whole, natural foods are good for us, doesn’t it make sense that it’s also what is good for them? Instead, many pet foods contain a number of fillers that aren’t healthy.
Our cat is part of our family, and I want to make sure he is eating a healthy cat food. He deserves a food with real meat! Because of this, I definitely appreciate Rachael Ray Nutrish. Not only does it contain real meat, but real meat is also the first ingredient. Bart appreciates it, too!
Nutrish For Cats Healthy Cat Food
Bart loves his Rachael Ray Nutrish for Cats. He particularly loved both varieties of the Wet Cat Food, but I also have never seen him gobble up dray cat food like he has been with his Real Salmon & Brown Rice. His favorite seemed to be the Tuna Purrfection.
Nutrish for Cats Natural Dry Cat Food is available in the Real Salmon & Brown Rice and Real Chicken & Brown Rice. The Nutrish for Cats Natural Wet Cat Food is available in the Tuna Purrfection, Ocean Fish & Chicken Catch-iatore, Chicken Purrcata, Lip Smackin’ Sardine & Mackerel, Ocean Fish-A-Licious, and Paw Lickin’ Chicken & Liver. Aren’t the names fun and clever, too? Plus, you can find it in many local stores that carry groceries.

Dinner For Two

To really drive the point home, we were provided with recipes featuring the ingredients that are in Nutrish for Cats. I decided to use the Salmon recipe since Bart is enjoying his Salmon & Brown Rice food. Our daughter was particularly fond of this idea and even asked if Bart could sit at the table with us when we eat it! Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room for that, but we both got to enjoy a tasty Salmon and Brown Rice dinner!
Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper

Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper recipe from the Kitchen of Rachael Ray

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of brown rice
  • 1 bundle watercress or upland cress (2 cups), stemmed and coarsely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), divided
  • 4 medium to large carrots or multi-colored farmer’s market carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch dice
  • 1/4 teaspoon all-natural liquid smoke
  • 1/2 cup dark amber maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 4 salmon fillets, skin removed (8 ounces each)
  • 2 teaspoons Old Bay seafood seasoning
  • 2 cups frozen sweet peas
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup chives, chopped
  • Salt and pepper

I, personally, didn’t use watercress or the Old Bay seafood seasoning. Instead I just left out the watercress and made my own seasoning blend with paprika, salt, and pepper.
Preparation
Prepare the brown rice according to package directions. When rice is done, fluff with a fork and combine with watercress leaves. (Or in our case, just don’t add watercress leaves.)
When the rice has been cooking for 5 minutes, pre-heat the broiler and heat a skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon EVOO, a turn of the pan. Add the carrots to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Sauté to tender-crisp, 6-7 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small pot, bring the liquid smoke, maple syrup and cider vinegar to a boil and reduce over high heat, stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Season the salmon with salt, pepper and Old Bay seafood seasoning (or your own seasoning preference). Heat the remaining tablespoon EVOO, a turn of the pan, in a large, ovensafe, nonstick sillet and cook the salmon top-side down, 3-4 minutes. Flip and pour the maple syrup glaze over the top of the fish and place under the broiler for 3 minutes to caramelize the glaze.
Add the peas to the carrots and heat through while the fish is under the broiler. Add the butter and chives to the veggies. When the butter has melted, turn off the heat.
Serve the salmon with peas and carrots and rice with watercress alongside.
This recipe serves 4 (though we stretched it to serve all 5 of us).
Smoky Maple-Glazed Salmon Supper from the Kitchen of Rachael Ray
Our “Dinner for Two” (or technically dinner for six) was amazing. I just love that Rachael Ray took pet nutrition to the next level by working with pet nutrition experts to offer amazing natural food for cats. Using real meat and cutting out all the junk is wonderful, and I’m glad to know our sweet Bart is eating something that makes him happy and is healthy, too!
Cut out all the fillers, animal by-products, artificial flavors or preservatives. Simple and healthy. A lesson from Bart – Sometimes it’s the simple things that make us happy!
