Our kids are hands-on learners, and it’s particularly important for subjects that are harder for them to learn (like Science) to really give them that experience. It helps them to stay interested and involved in their learning.

Needless to say we love hands-on science projects and love to make them a regular part of our homeschool. Discover with Dr. Cool offers a variety of great (and most awarded) kids science kits. They’re a great addition to any homeschool science curriculum as well as in the classroom! Perhaps your children need to a science fair project or would just love digging deeper into science – the Discover with Dr. Cool science kits are a great option! With Christmas around the corner, these kits would make great gifts as well!
For our review, we received the Crystal Growing Kit – Purple Amethyst. It is recommended for children over age three, and we have been using it with all three of our children (ages 4, 6, and 8).
This Crystal Growing Kit is a great hands-on science kit that helps children learn how crystals form. Our daughter was particularly excited about the purple amethyst because she loves purple! We have been learning all about crystals by comparing the crystals we are growing to real amethyst specimen and completing activities in the included Activity Booklet.
It also includes an Adventure Guide which takes us step by step through getting started and has thorough information about crystals such as: what they are, how they form, what their uses are, and different types of crystals. It also goes into more detail specifically about the Amethyst. For our younger kids, this was a lot of information to take in at once, so I went over it a little at a time. It is recommended to let the experiment sit for 3-4 days for bigger crystals, so this was ideal for going over a little bit of the information each day as we looked at the progression of the crystals.
I love everything the Crystal Growing Kit – Purple Amethyst includes. We have all enjoyed watching the crystals grow, and seeing it and being involved with it hands-on really got the kids interested in learning more. I love that it includes such thorough information about crystals for great lessons and fun activities as well! I was so happy with how eager the kids were to get started, which is always exciting versus hearing “do we have to?” I would definitely recommend this kit to other homeschooling families and anyone that has children that enjoy hands-on learning!
The Crystal Growing Kit – Purple Amethyst has won the Creative Child Magazine Preferred Choice Award 2014 and Tillywig Brain Child Toy Award 2014. It can be purchased for just $9.99!

WOW! That sounds like you guys had a great time with the Hands On Science Project with Growing your own Amethyst! I would have liked to see a picture of it once it was done growing, or is it still growing? It’s always fun to have a hands on project especially when you are homeschooling your children! I think I also would have enjoyed watching it grow as well! They sure have an awful lot of nice things on the website! I know that Nolan, my grandson, is going to be 4 on the 15th of Nov., however, I’m not 100% sure if he’s ready for something like this! Thanks so much for the Terrific Review on this Science Project and explaining how it worked and how you worked it into your studies! I truly do appreciate it! Thanks so much! Michele 🙂

I love doing science experiments with my granddaughters – they would love this, especially because it is purple. I like how you show everything that comes in the kit.
Looks like a fun activity. What a great way for hands on learning.
This is such a fun project with kids.
I think my grandson would love this. He loves learning new things and he would get a big kick out of the growing crystals. I think it is a wonderful idea to get kids into hands on learning. They tend to absorb more when doing things , rather than just reading about them.,
Definitely! Our kids take it in so much more when they’re working hands on!

My son and I have made many crystals from different kits and with household stuff like borax. It’s a lot of fun and this amethyst kit looks like it would make really cool crystals. I really enjoy doing science and electronics and woodworking & metalworking projects with my son. Next year he wants to forge a sword in our garage/shop. I’ll have to make some room for that and I think it’ll be fun too.

I love this, I want to get one for my Granddaughter and start it out together at her house. How amazing, she so loves experiments. We had her birthday party at the Museum of Life and Science (Durham, NC) this year and they learned all kinds of great experiments.
