Families homeschool for different reasons. We knew God was calling our family to homeschool. Even the I ignored it at first because I was afraid I couldn’t do it because our oldest son is on the Autism Spectrum. It only took two weeks until I was uncomfortable enough to pull him out of public school and start homeschooling. I was really intrigued by IndoctriNation by Great Commission Films and couldn’t wait to see how it went!
IndoctriNation is a DVD that is 102 minutes long. Because our children are younger (our oldest is 8) my husband and I decided to watch the movie by ourselves after the children went to bed. I’m glad we did. There is nothing intentionally bad in this movie, but it’s clearly a movie to speak to parents and younger children wouldn’t be interested. There were some things, though, that were just shocking to me!
Let me explain. IndoctriNation follows a homeschool family around as they learn more about the public school system. They interview teachers, principals, etc. They even showed scenes of things children were discussing. These were children that were the same age as our oldest son discussing things young children don’t need to be discussing, and they were being told things by their teachers that they don’t need to be told! It was upsetting!
What I found most interesting was the great debate amongst Christians when it comes to education seems to be educate your children at home so you know what they are learning and know they will be taught in the ways of the Lord or to send them to school to be a light in a dark place. In fact, those he interviewed seemed to emphasize that message of being that light explaining why they work there.
There is one major problem, though. If they see that light it’s big trouble. It could mean suspension or job loss for faculty or discipline for a student. How can you be a light when you must be covered? It was eye opening how restricting things have gotten!
I had to keep pausing the movie because I was so involved and interested in everything I was taking in that I had to talk about it. My husband and I went to very different schools. He graduated with over 1500 people, and I graduated with 46. I went to the same school from Kindergarten – 12th Grade. My school was far more flexible with faith-based topics. Most of us were Christians and everybody knew it. Even then, though, things were changing.
Through IndoctriNation I learned a lot about public schools – the history behind them and why the history behind them is so concerning and important to know! Whether you homeschool or not (maybe even more so if not) IndoctriNation is a powerful, eye-opening movie that you should definitely see! I don’t want to be a complete spoiler, but there is a fun celebration that is the perfect ending!

This film intrigues me. All three of my children are in public schools so I am curious to see it. I’ll check them out on YouTube.
