It has been a while since I shared a marriage book review, but I definitely think marriage should be at the forefronts of our minds because where your marriage is not doing so well, just “so so,” or even great, it always needs attention. Achieving “oneness” with your spouse is key, and I don’t think this is possible unless you’re thinking about it, and working on it consistently. So when the opportunity to review The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted presented itself, I was eager to read it and share it!
I admit, as a fan of The 5 Love Languages and of Dr. Chapman’s work in general I was also very intrigued to see what The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted would have in store!
My first impression of The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted is that it’s not too thick. As much as I love reading, I don’t get as much reading time as I would like, so books that can pack a lot into fewer words and pages are definitely appreciated. Although it definitely does pack a punch in just about 135 pages, it’s definitely not a book you want to rush through.
In fact, each chapter has “Your Turn” section at the end where you not only reflect on what you read but implement it as well. You may be asked to think about and write down things about your spouse or yourself, read relevant Bible verses, perform an act toward your spouse or even yourself, etc. The activities vary greatly depending on the topic of the chapter.
My husband and I consider ourselves to be happily married, though we know financial strains, both having physical disabilities, and raising special needs children does put a strain on our marriage. I was thrilled he was willing to do the activities as well, and I do think there is a big advantage to both spouses doing them, though I also believe if only one spouse starts it can still make a big impact! Plus it really does cover those topics that strain a lot of marriages like money, responsibilities, intimacy, decision-making, and more.
Overall, I definitely feel like, once again, Dr. Chapman really delivered. I also think it’s pretty amazing they offer a free study guide for leaders. There are even Small Group Study resources available for sale!

There’s never enough good information and support for a better marriage. Gary Chapman knows his stuff and knows marriage. I’d love to learn to improve mine.
What interests me most about the book is the study guide for leaders.
