Patterns of Evidence Exodus {Review}

August 4, 2015 by Emilee Evans

When it comes to the timeline of Biblical events, there are a lot of questions and many scientists would say there are also discrepancies. This is particularly true of the Exodus – one of the most amazing and key events in the Bible. So what are believers to do? I, personally, just believe the Bible as fact, but filmmaker Timothy Mahoney wanted to take it to the next step. He starts with the questions, “Is the Bible just a myth, or did the archaeologists get it wrong?”

The questioning of the Exodus dates back more than 50 years. In fact, many prominent archaeologists and historians not only proclaim that there are no hard facts of the Exodus, but that the archaeological record is completely opposed to the Bible’s account. The fact that Timothy Mahoney decided to search for facts is phenomenal. There will always be diversion between scientific skeptics and those who believe the Bible to be true, so I love when someone challenges this notion of untruth and digs for true evidence of Biblical events – and finds it.
Patterns of Evidence Exodus does just that. Timothy Mahoney travels around the world to search for solid patterns of evidence of the Exodus and uncovers a lot of truth. It is the most in-depth archaeological investigation into the Exodus from Egypt ever captured on film. What I love is the purpose of the film is to communicate the TRUTH of the Bible and help equip believers with defending their faith and the Bible.

This film had my husband and I both amazed. The patterns of evidence they found is absolutely amazing, and the way they describe the discrepancies really makes so much sense. They shared evidence from all kinds of people from archaeologists, people of faith, scientists, historians, Egyptologists and more.
The evidence they found is amazing. One very specifically described the Hebrews living in Egypt from their professions to the physical appearance, 12 tribes from the North, and even their tombs (like a prominent tomb for Joseph where the statue is even wearing a coat of many colors).
What I found so fascinating is how the events just match up so well with the Bible’s account. The only thing that is “off” is the timeline, and there are even many reasons why it could be this way from the fact that we based time on the Egyptian timeline, which may be off to the fact that there may be misunderstandings – particularly that the Exodus happened during the reign of Rameses.
This was just assumed because the land is referred to the land with his name. Does this necessarily mean it happened during this time or because the information was translated later to use the city name as it was known at that time rather than what it was called at the time of the Exodus? In fact, even if you look at exact times in the Bible, there is no way the Exodus could have happened at the time of Rameses II. If you’re looking in the wrong time, you can’t find any evidence!
What I found most fascinating is one of the more prominent Egytologists, David Rohl, (who is agnostic) has uncovered some of the best information of the Exodus and has a lot of evidence the Exodus did, indeed, happen. I find many of the Egyptologists and archaeologists are biased because they don’t want to believe what happened in the Bible did actually happen, so it was very unique to see someone who is agnostic supporting and helping to uncover the patterns of evidence of the Exodus.
Overall, I think this is a fascinating film. Although Timothy Mahoney is Christian, the film is presented more as a documentary and really doesn’t have a bias one way or the other. It simply presents the research and things they have uncovered and it even contains interviews of those that don’t believe it happened. They did not edit it in a way to make it seem only one-sided but rather presented all the facts. They truly set out to uncover and discover the evidence.

Jesus Is the Good News! {DVD Review}

December 4, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Jesus is the good news! I love this, and I love sharing this message with our children! What about the hard parts, though? What about explaining why Jesus is our Savior – he died for us, and that’s a very serious truth. Our children know that, though I admit it’s not something I have explained in detail. How do you explain it to young children?

What’s In The Bible DVD Series Volume 10: Jesus Is the Good News! is the first DVD of the New Testament introduction from the What’s In The Bible Series. It not only goes into detail about the Gospels (how some start at the beginning {the birth of Jesus} and others start when Jesus was a man and baptized) but why they tell of the good news. It was a really detailed introduction of the New Testament! Once again, our kids were captivated by Phil Vischer and the fun puppets. It includes 2 – 25 minute episodes!
What I like most, though, is that this DVD doesn’t simply skim over the fact that Jesus died for our sins. In fact, it makes it a very prominent detail. After Phil Vischer talks about this, the characters comment how sad this is. They feel heartbroken – very appropriate emotions. I think they’re emotions that are very necessary for truly understanding what Jesus did for us. It explains how he died under all our sin.
If he died, though, how then did he conquer death? I love that they ask these questions because they are the type of questions the kids have! So, of course, he goes into detail about how Jesus didn’t stay dead, which, of course, is a really important part of the story! He is risen!

Having now reviewed two of the DVDs from the What’s In The Bible Series, we are hooked! We have definitely added more of the DVDs to our wishlist! I just love how they go into the important details and do so in a way kids understand and keeps their attention.

Why Do We Call it Christmas?

November 20, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Christmas can be rather confusing for young children. Is it about Jesus? Is it about Santa? Presents? Stockings? What is it all about and what does it all mean? Why do we call it Christmas?
Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Why Do We Call it Christmas?
Buck Denver Asks … Why Do We Call It Christmas? Who is Buck Denver?

Buck Denver Asks … What’s in the Bible? is the 13-DVD series from VeggieTales® creator Phil Vischer. In his first new project since VeggieTales, Vischer has set out to teach kids (and parents!) the story of the Bible – God’s great rescue plan!

We are becoming familiar with Buck Denver Asks…What’s in the Bible?, and I was excited to check out this movie. You see, Christmas is one of the things I have a hard time explaining. We, personally, don’t celebrate Christmas with Santa Claus coming on Christmas morning, and I have a hard time explaining why some people do. This DVD not only told us how Santa Claus is related to Christmas by going into details about Saint Nicolas – who he was, how there was a Saint Nicolas Day on December 6th, and how it came to be that we started referring to him as “Santa Claus.”

Additionally, we learned exactly why it is called Christmas and why it is celebrated on December 25th. I have to admit, I learned A LOT from this movie myself! So not only do our kids have a DVD they enjoy watching and learned about Christmas, but I have a better idea of why we call it Christmas as well!
We all really enjoyed this movie, and if you have young kids, it is a great movie for explaining exactly why we do call it Christmas using Biblical history that has fun characters they will enjoy!

Curiosity Quest Review

April 12, 2014 by Emilee Evans

Curiosity Quest Review
We had the chance to review both the DVD Combo Pack – Produce and DVD Combo Pack – Swimmers of the Sea from Curiosity Quest. They are fun, educational DVDs geared for ages 7-14, though all three of our kids were interested in and watched them. They are ages almost 8, 6, and almost 4.
Curiosity Quest is driven by the viewers. Much of what they explore and share is based on requests they receive. The host, Joel Greene, ventures out on these quests to dig deeper into the subject at hand. He does more than just go and ask questions – he gets hands-on and really explores each subject thoroughly. It’s not only educational, but fun and entertaining as well. As I mentioned, all three of our kids really got into them and enjoyed them!
Curiosity Quest Review
DVD Combo Pack – Produce includes these episodes: Mushrooms, Orange Packing and Cranberries. Each episode is about 30 minutes and not only shares Joel’s adventures, but also asks questions to keep kids engaged and get them involved as well. In this DVD Combo we learn how mushrooms and oranges are grown, packed and shipped. We also learn how cranberries are harvested. Our kids were really fascinated to see these processes because it’s so different than just our little garden outside. It really helped them to understand how some of our favorite foods make it to the grocery stores.
Curiosity Quest Review
DVD Combo Pack – Swimmers of the Sea is definitely the kids’ favorite, which is no surprise since they always love learning about animals! Each episode in this DVD Combo Pack is also about 30 minutes. This DVD Combo Pack includes these episodes: Turtle Rescue, Penguins, and Salmon Hatchery. We learn a lot about Sea Turtles and the dangers they are presented with, how penguins eat (which was particularly enjoyable for our 3 year old for some reason) and live, and all kinds of facts about salmon.
For the DVD Combo Pack – Produce, we watched each 30 minute episode individually. I encouraged the kids to answer the questions, which means they would have to pay attention, too! When we got to the DVD Combo Pack – Swimmers of the Sea, though, they actually asked to watch the other episodes, too! We watched the first two episodes in one sitting, but I thought three would be a little too much, so we saved it for the next day.
They really watched and listened carefully so they would be able to answer the questions, and they also laughed and enjoyed it as well! I think Curiosity Quest is a great educational experience that kids really enjoy as well. In fact, ours have asked when we can get new DVDs!
DVD Combo Pack – Produce and DVD Combo Pack – Swimmers of the Sea can both be purchased for $24.95 each. I discovered Curiosity Quest also offers a Homeschool Annual Membership which includes two DVDs a month and a Homeschool appropriate curriculum for $264 per year or $24.99 per month.
