Teaching French with Middlebury Interactive Languages {Review}

October 27, 2016 by Emilee Evans

I have been teaching French to my kids on and off over the past few years. Because I studied French for so long, I thought it was only natural that I’d be teaching French to our kids! One of my favorite resources for teaching French is Middlebury Interactive Languages. Our daughter (age 8) has used their French Courses in the past. Although she wasn’t ready to move on to French II she was definitely ready to move up to the higher grade level. So, she has been using Elementary French I (Grades 3-5).
 Middlebury Interactive Languages Review
Middlebury Interactive Languages is an online language curriculum for Kindergarten through 12th Grade. They offer various languages including: French, Spanish, German and Chinese. The courses help students learn both the language and culture. Courses are offered based on both the skill level AND the grade level. This means a high school student who is just starting a new language can learn in a way that is more appropriate for their age/grade level versus the learning style that is more appropriate for a young child.
Aurora has been using the Elementary French I Program for grades 3-5 about 3-4 days per week. Last year she was doing French I for grades K-2, and they definitely take a different approach. The K-2 lessons were a little shorter and more basic. This year, she is still getting the full immersion as told through recognizable stories like “Little Red Riding Hood” as well as stories that may not be familiar to us. Each lesson takes her about 20-30 minutes to complete.
Middlebury Interactive Languages is an online account based program. To access it, we simply go to the website on one of the computers (with internet access). All of her progress is saved as she goes. When first logging in, she has the option to start where she left off or the course that is scheduled for the day. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to change the schedule, so if they get ahead or behind, it’s definitely much easier to just choose where they left off.
Spanish, French, German or Chinese {Middlebury Interactive Languages}
There are 16 total Units for the French I (Grades 3-5) program. Each Unit starts with an Introductory video for the first lesson and is broken down into 6 total lessons. Each lesson is anywhere from 4-8 “slides.” The whole lesson can be viewed as slides on the left hand side. The lessons vary by day so on some days she may have been watching a story and participating in learning activities while other days she might be taking reviews and recording more phrases. The lessons are interactive, which I think is definitely helpful. Some of the interactive lessons she’s been doing include: listening to and then recording words and phrases, moving the correct word or phrase to the correct picture, watching stories and songs, exploring French culture and more.
Once logging on and choosing her lessons, Aurora is able to navigate the program on her own. When she completes activities they are marked off showing how many were correct. For activities that include recording words and phrases, it is marked off as complete when she is finished, and I can go in and review them. Although the program does have a “Gradebook,” I can review, it only shows the grades for things like quizzes and tests.
One feature I particularly appreciate is the “Table of Contents.” From there I can see every lesson in the course. When I click to expand the lessons, I can also see what she has completed as they are marked with a check mark. This way I can easily see if she has missed anything as well as what will be coming up!

Overall, Middlebury Interactive Languages is still one of my favorite resources for teaching French. Although there are still a few features I would change (like being able to adjust the calendar), I love that the lessons are fun for her, and she enjoys them. I appreciate that the lessons include so many details and even include culture, which is a detail I think many other programs miss. I like that they offer lessons not only for experience level but for grade level as well so the lessons are better adapted for that age range. I definitely think it was much more appropriate for her to take French I in the Grades 3-5 level, and she has been doing great with the lessons as well!

Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting Review

October 7, 2016 by Emilee Evans

We have delayed and/or struggling readers and writers in our home. It definitely can be challenging, but we’re always excited to discover resources that can help. Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting from Everyday Education, LLC is one of those resources. It offers a step-by-step program for teaching children to read well and have beautiful handwriting. This is exactly what our children need, so I was definitely excited for the chance to review it.
Beautiful Handwriting, Literature and Poetry {Everyday Education, LLC}
Everyday Education, LLC offers a variety of homeschool resources and information. They offer resources that help families streamline necessities for the homeschool to have time for more important things. Additionally, they offer homeschool resources for teaching language arts from preschool to high school.
For our review, we received the digital version of Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting. It can be downloaded to any device and accessed as a PDF. The ebook can be printed multiple times for use within the same family, so I have been using it with both of our boys (ages 10 and 6). It contains 60 phonics-based lessons with italic handwriting that progresses from straight to slant and joined. It can be used both as a primary or supplemental teaching tool. We have been using it as a supplement.
The beginning of the Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting ebook has an extensive Foreword and Introduction. It is a very thorough introduction to the program including tips, suggested schedule, reading time and more as well as how to use this program. Additionally, the 1st Chapter dives further into tips for teaching. By the time I was done reading through all of them, I understood the concepts of the program, how to use it properly for the children with different needs (one is struggling while the other is just beginning), and why this method is recommended. I was definitely impressed with all the information it included.

Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting Review

Perfect Reading Beautiful Handwriting
To teach this program to a beginning reader versus a delayed reader/struggling writer is a little different. With our youngest, we progressed slowly – about 5-10 minutes a day, 5 days per week. This schedule is ideal for him. He does know many of the letter sounds, but it was a great way to introduce the program without overwhelming him. The writing, in particular, overwhelms him as he feels it’s something he just can’t do. Doing a little at a time has been helpful. Although he has still been hesitant about writing, he has continued to progress without fuss or complaint. That alone is encouraging!
Our oldest son is a delayed reader, but he knows his letter sounds. We were able to skip some sections as recommended in the “School age children that are already reading” schedule. If we run into things that are more challenging, I will switch to the “student with learning challenges” schedule, which is the same as the beginning readers. For now, we have been working about 10 minutes each day, 5 days per week. We skip “Introduction,” “Sound Out,” and “Read” and focus on the writing.
Because he struggles with writing, it’s definitely not his favorite thing to do. In fact, if it were up to him, he wouldn’t do it at all. Because Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting teaches handwriting in this “Italic” fashion, though, I have found he’s much more receptive. He finds this style easier on his hands and easier to use in general. 20 of the letters are made in one stroke, which is very helpful for those with fine-motor challenges. The less he has to pick up the pencil, the better! Plus the letters are more oval than circular, which doesn’t seem like a big difference, but I’ve been surprised the difference it does make!

Progressing Through Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting

The Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting book starts in chapter two with the simplest of exercises – simply tracing the letters. What an ideal introduction, though! They introduce the writing style right away. Then as we progress through each lesson, they are already familiar with the writing style. With our youngest, I didn’t have to do a lot of explaining as writing the letters is still fairly new to him. With our oldest, though, I did point out the differences in the letter styles so he would recognize it right away. While tracing the letters I did also make it a point to emphasize the letter sounds particularly for our youngest.
Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting then breaks up into lessons. The lessons include short words focusing on a specific vowel sound followed by writing sentences using these words. Writing independently was a little more challenging for our youngest, so we really focused on tracing the letters, and I just continued to encourage him. Although it seems he may be progressing more slowly, I do definitely feel he is progressing.
We print out the lessons as needed, but you could surely print the entire ebook at once. I simply print out what we need for that week. I, personally, only print out the pages they will be writing on and read the words on the iPad from the PDF. I’m always a big fan of saving paper!
Overall, I do find Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting to be an effective tool for beginning and struggling readers. Although we use it as a supplement, I do think it would also work well as a primary learning tool for beginning readers and writers.

The Cat of Bubastes {Heirloom Audio Productions Review}

September 29, 2016 by Emilee Evans

We have been so blessed with the audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions, so I was definitely excited for the opportunity to share our The Cat of Bubastes review. Adapted from the book, The Cat of Bubastes, by G.A. Henty, this latest audio drama shares a tale of mystery, intrigue, and suspense as the main characters are challenged in their faith and loyalty.
Heirloom Audio Productions ~Cat of Bubastes
For our review we received The Cat of Bubastes 2-CD set as well as special bonuses that include an MP3 download of the story, a downloadable Study Guide, an E-Book, a printable copy of a related inspirational verse, a printable copy of the cast poster, access to the behind-the-scenes documentary, and access to the Live the Adventure Letter E-Newsletter.
As with other Heirloom Audio Productions we’ve been using the method that works best for us. We listen to it all the way through the first time and then break it into 1-5 tracks for reviewing the material and using the Study Guide. I do this because I find it’s been easier to understand the story when we’ve listened all the way through rather than breaking it up into tracks from the beginning. Then, breaking it down into sections and answering the questions for smaller sections is definitely best for our kids.
The Study Guide is 47 pages and is broken down into parts. It is broken down into these sections:

  • Listening Well with comprehension type questions.
  • Thinking Further with questions for a deeper understanding.
  • Defining Words which are vocabulary words from the story.

The Study Guide really helps to reinforce what we have been listening to. Our kids are ages 10, 8, and 6 and all have special needs, so open-ended questions can be challenging. So I mostly stick to the Listening Well portion and give a little help here and there to spark their ideas. The open-ended questions continue to get easier for them, though! The Heirloom Audio Productions have really helped with this!

The Cat of Bubastes Review

Cat of Bubastes Review

Our kids have really been enjoying The Cat of Bubastes. In fact, I would say they’ve really “gotten into” this one a little more than the others. This is saying a lot because they really get into all of them! I think the concept of this story of testing loyalty and faith is a concept that is easy for them to grasp. Plus, they are constantly on the edge of their seats as follow the story of the young prince, Amuba, and his friend Jethro. They get trapped into a plot to attack the family of their Egyptian friend. Their loyalty is tested, and they discover more about God’s character as well.
Once again, I was impressed with the audio quality, sound effects, and acting. The Cat of Bubastes has an amazing cast including: Brian Blessed, Anthony Daniels, Sylvester McCoy, Elizabeth Counsell, Russell Boulter and John Rhys-Davies.
Once again, Heirloom Audio Productions really delivered. I love that we can listen to this exciting story and know that it offers a great faith-based story while tapping into history. Once again we have definitely “lived the adventure!”

Ultimate Phonics Reading Program Review

September 28, 2016 by Emilee Evans

Learning to read hasn’t come easy here in our house. With our kids’ special needs and developmental delays, there have been some challenges in this process. My husband also has reading challenges and struggled quite a bit with reading growing up. That’s why I was so interested in checking out the Ultimate Phonics Reading Program from Spencer Learning.
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program {Spencer Learning}
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program is designed for both beginning readers as well as struggling readers of all ages. It is designed to improve not only reading but also comprehension and spelling as well. It teaches the foundation of reading and provides a lot of practice. Ultimate Phonics Reading Program has 262 lessons that cover 4,400 different words and 2,100 sentences total. It starts from a basic level to an advanced level. It is a 100% educational program in a form that isn’t flashy or distracting and is easy to use.
We have been using Ultimate Phonics Reading Program with both of our boys for our reading program review – a beginning reader (age 6) and a struggling reader (age 10). It’s a downloadable program with a license for use on multiple computers around your home. There are no logins or account information, and it can be accessed from any computer that has the program installed. It can be downloaded and used on any computer that is running Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP; or OSX 10.5.8 or higher on Mac Computers. We have been successfully using it on my Laptop running Windows 10.
Overall, the download didn’t take very long, and the program runs smoothly. Although it can be used by multiple children, if they are using it on the same computer, you will have to make note of where they are in the lesson. Unlike programs online where children have access to their own account and progress is saved, this program isn’t account based. Although it will start at the spot where a child left off, it does not save progress for multiple children. I simply make a note of what lesson each boy is in so we can pick up at the next lesson.
Spencer Learning Ultimate Phonics Reading Program Review
Although it is a progressive program, I opted to start our oldest son further in the program. It does start with the very basics of letter sounds, and although he is delayed, he is definitely beyond that stage. Our youngest, though, is a beginning reader, so I started him right at the beginning. There is additional information on how to use the lessons. It doesn’t have a student placement test, but it does have a reading test to determine whether or not your child could benefit from the program.
Our oldest son has been working on sentences while our youngest has been working on individual letter sounds and blending them into short words. The program is rather basic. The lessons are essential done through scrolling over letter sounds and words. With our youngest, I sit down with him and do the lessons with him (not for him), but our oldest does lessons on his own.

Ultimate Phonics Reading Program Review

I thought because this program is less flashy, it might be more ideal for our boys. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for our youngest. He has definitely done better with the “edutainment” programs. Our youngest was so put off by the monotone voice and basic lessons to the point that it was hard to get him to sit still for it. Plus, he didn’t really progress at all on his own. He required a lot of my assistance because there were just too many letter sounds at once.
Ultimate Phonics Reading Program {Spencer Learning}
Our oldest has done OK with this program. He says he does like that he is learning new words. My biggest concern for him is a lot of his reading struggles involve not reading sentences smoothly. For example, he reads each word individually and not like it’s part of a sentence. When he clicks on the speaker it does read the sentences as they should be said. It also allows him to scroll over each word individually, though. This is read in a monotone manner when scrolled over individually. I think it would be more helpful for it to highlight each word as the sentence is read rather than scrolling over each word individually.
Overall, I think Ultimate Phonics Reading Program can be a great resource for beginning and struggling readers. It could be used as a main program for beginning readers or a supplement for struggling readers. It is a supplement I am considering continuing with our oldest, but it just isn’t a good fit for our beginning reader. I truly believe each child has different learning preferences and there is no “one size fits all,” and that is definitely how I feel about this as well. If he’s not interested, he just doesn’t absorb any of what he’s been learning.
