Homeschooling Distraction

December 18, 2012 by Emilee Evans

I knew this year would be more challenging now that Chaz is a little older and still quite demanding when it comes to getting attention. So, I figured since I would be working with Brayden and Aurora together he would either a) demand my attention in other ways or b) want to join in. I was hoping more for option b and am always prepared with preschool projects for him, which has come in handy a few times. Option b is uncommon, though. Surprisingly, option a, although it was prevalent at first, has also become uncommon. He just plays so nicely while we are homeschooling. I’m not saying he never interrupts and causes distractions, but it’s far less than I imagined!
We do have a pestering distraction, though, EVERY day. It’s the cat! He’s not only a distraction for the kids. He’s a distraction to me as well! He’s on one desk. Then, he’s on another desk. Next, he’s in the window with his tail in Aurora’s face. Or he’s on my lap (or book – or both) or attacking my hair from behind. He meows and Aurora feels she MUST go pet him. It’s somewhat amusing and somewhat annoying. I just never expected such a big distraction from the cat! Unfortunately, I can’t entertain him with preschool workbook pages or art projects! I might be able to buy him off with doughnuts, though! Haha

So, we are learning to work around him, and we’re getting a lot of practice in learning to focus despite having distractions. Some days are easier than others as it’s a bit tricky for both kids to focus due to their special needs, and some days the cat is more persistent than other days. So, I now implement a kitty time out in our room when necessary! Who would have guessed the cat would be such a “challenge” for us! But then again, it’s much like having another kid just begging for attention!

I can understand, I have a furry distraction too. But mine is not feline he is a canine and a VERY needy canine too. he is always following me around and wanting to lay in my lap. He barks at me if I ignore him to long. I can’t do a doggy time out though because he sits at the door and barks and whines. lol

haha I’m surprised our dog isn’t more of a distraction – especially since our kitty is right there begging for attention. Usually she feels the need to intervene. I think it’s because our back room is small, and our pup is so big (she’s a mastiff), so she knows I’ll tell her to get out if she crowds her way in there! haha

        That’s funny.

I can see where that would be a distraction.

To cute. My dog is like that. Whenever I pay any attention whatsoever to our two cats, he’s right there begging for attention. Is there a door to the room where you can shut it while you are homeschooling your children, in order that all can concentrate? That might be a solution to the problem. Just a suggestion.

That cat is freakishly adorable. I’d be distracted, too!

Oh, good article and glad to read this. We are thinking of adopting a puppy and this could be easily be us and the puppy — it will distract and try to get our attention all the time during school 🙂 Cute kitty!!!
